HIGHER GRASS YIELDS
FROM SEED TREATMENT
Stands of grasses and legumes can
be substantially increased through the
use of modern seed disinfectants.
° Practical fill tests last year show-
ed that as a result-of seed treatment,
stands of alfalfa were increased by
29 per cent, alfalfa-clover mixture 44
per cent, miscellaneous legumes 22
per cent and miscellaneous grasses 41
per cent.
Treatment of such crops as wheat,
oats, barley, flax and corn to protect
them against smuts, seed rot, blight
and damping-off has been practiced
for years, treatment of grass and le-
gume seed is a relatively new idea
the practical value of which is not
widely known,
Since grasses and legumes are pro-
bably the most economic cattle food,
the importance of such seed disinfec-
tion cannot be overlooked in view cl
the mounting cost of other cattle
feeds.
The disinfectant used in the experi-
ments is marketed under the trade
name "Arasan."

Building Boom
At Mount Forest
Mt. Forest has become a building
boom town, with four big public pro-
jects aggregating ovxer $450,000 al-
ready under way or about to start,
These four main projects are:
1. The Mount Forest District High
School, final cost estimated at 5350,-
000.
2. The Mount Forest Separate
School, let to Mr. P. Brandon for
$60,000 complete. , 4
3. The Louise Marshall nurses' resi-
dence, actual tender not disclosed,.but
building will have a value in excess
of $30,000.
4. Canadian Legion Hall, actual
cost hard to assess because much of
the work has been voluntary and the
Legion has had splendid co-operation
from suppliers, but the building cer-
tainly will be worth more than $16,000
equipped.
In addition to these projects, resi-
dential construction and alterations
will boost the amount spent on build-
ing this year.
Big Earth Job
The Dunker Construction Co., of
Kitchener, contractors for the. High
School, was at work immediately after
the sod-turning ceremony last week.
Don Henderson has general super-
vision of the job and John Hogarth of
Ayr, is foreman.
The handsome new residence for the
Louise Marshall Hospital, for which
Mr. Brandon was the successful ten-
der, has its buff 'brick in place and
workmen began on the cornice last
week. A great amount of 'work re-
mains to be done inside. It will be
ready for occupancy this fall.
At the Legion- Hall, the members
are concentrating on the inside. A
visit to the hall disclosed a good-sized
auditorium upstairs, with adjoinng
modern ktchen, The hardwood floor
has yet to be put down.
In the basement much work remains
to be done, bilt it was complete enough
to give a person an idea of the fine
new home for the Legion.
Work on the Separate School Site
began on Friday.-Mount Forest Con-
federate.
HOW TO AVOID
CATTLE BLOAT
Growing a pasture mixture with the
proper grass-legume ratio is being
recognized as important grazing prac-
tice in preventing bloat in cattle.
Quoting recent experiments, they
say that the grass-legume ratio can
be controlled by the amount of nitro-
gen and potash that is applied. Potash
increases the legume stand and at the
same time nitrogen increases the
amount of grass. While it is import-
ant that the potash level in the soil
is high enough to support legumes, it
is even more essential that nitrogen
applications be adequate to keep the
proper grass-legume balance and
avoid 'bloat.
