Well, we've brushed the cobwebs -in many ways, especially in Gary,
off our trusty portable and have set
ourselves back up in business for an,-
other spell—and speaking of spells,
here's one that shouldn't happen in
the best of families.
Bill Diggins of Brampton, Ontario,
lent a pair of trousers to a friend.
When they were returned with a large
rip and no apology, Bill picked up a
rock and fired it at his friend's car.
In court "I I lost my said,
head."

A Chicago cab driver complained
that political convention delegates
aren't the free spenders they're crack-
ed up to be.
He says "Those guys blew into
town with one shirt and a 10-dollar
bill. So far they haven't changed
either."
It may be the heat—but New York
railroaders say a four-foot crocodile
slithered out of a mail car.
They coaxed it back into its crate
which was addressed to the New York
University. But university officials
say they haven't received the reptile.
They did get a 24-inch alligator.

Usually a city fights to keep a thriv-
ing industry within the town limits.
But the townsfolk of Mt. Clemens,
Michigan, rose up as one man to get
Gerald Schmitt to move his industry
out of town—even though they had
nothing against Schmitt, and his
business was big and prosperous.
Finally the city commission had to
give in and tell Schmitt he'd have to
give up his business or leave town.
Schmitt moved. He does a thriving
business with scientific laboratories
and hospitals and he wasn't going to
give it up. But you can understand
how the citizens of Mt. Clemens felt
about it. Schmitt raises mice.

The city of Dallas, Texas, faced a
$28,000 lawsuit because of Joe Stalin
and his girl friend Olga.
A man charged that the pair was
clawing and biting ihs 15-year-old
son. Joe and Olga are Russian bears
at the Marsalis Park Zoo.

Indiana, where garbage collection is
three weeks behind schedule.
It seems thousands of steel workers
have been athome for the past while
because of the steel strike, And the
mayor says they've been spending
their time cleaning out basements
and attics.
He says: "They're throwing out
everything from stuffed carrots to
fringed surrey-tops."

The pioneers who conquered the
wild country in South Dakota had
humor as well as muscles. According
to historians they chose place names
with tongue in cheek.
That's how it happens you hear of
such names as Shirttail Gulch, Two-
Bit Gulch and Holy Terror, in the
black hills of South Dakota. Say the
historians, "Shirttail Gulch got its
name when an irate father, clad in
long nightshirt, chased his daughter's
noisy and over-eager suitor up the
oanyon."
They say prospectors named Two-
bit Gulch because it yielded no more
than two bits of gold a pan. And Holy
Terror, according to the records, was
named by a prospector in honour of
his wife,

Most visitors to New York city
gawk upward. But a Baltimore,
Maryland, man got in trouble for
looking down—with his mouth open.
He reported to New York police re-
cently that he'd lost his upper plate
at 8th avenue and 33rd street. It had
fallen way out of reach, through a
sidewalk grating.
Now in an emergency the
police of the , city of New York are
ready to answer the call of duty.
They've recovered the man's choppers
from the depth in which he lost them,
and have informed him they're re-
turning them to him by mail.
So help me .THEY TELL ME
