Meeting The opening item on the program of United Church the July meeting of the Women's In- I The W.A. will meet in the church stitute at the home of Mrs. Norman Gedcke on Tuesday afternoon, was the making of an angel cake by Mrs. Glenn Johnston. The cake was later sampled at the tea hour, Presiding for the meeting was Mrs. Cecil Wilson president. Mrs. C, D. Walmsley, sec- retary-treasurer, presented the min- utes, the financial statement and read thank-you notes from shut-ins. Roll call was answered by displaying most useful kitchen gadget, Mrs. Glad Edgar read the motto, "The beauty of the home is order; the blessing of the home is contentment; the glory of the home is hospitality and the crown of the home is Godliness." Arrange- ments were made to go to Goderich on Friday, July 18th, for a picnic at Harbor Park at the noon hour and to visit the museum in the afternoon. Mrs. Wm, McCann, district presi- dent, was guest speaker and stated that the number of• branches in W,I. is at an all-time high, although mem- bership had not inereased in accord- ance with the number of branches. Speaking of the Guelph officers' con- ference, she mentioned having en- joyed the slides shown by Miss Rey- nolds on "Farming in Pakistan". She concluded in a humorous vein, Mrs. Crosby Sothern, Fordwich, district secretary-treasurer, in her talk spoke of the preparation being made to en- tertain the Country Women of the World in Toronto in 1953, Miss Joyce Jardine, London, is spending a few days at the parental home. Mr. and Mrs. Alec Marshall and Jimmie, Stratford, visited with Mrs. Mrs. Norman Wade. Each one is W. H. Marshall. to provide her own dishes, cutlery, Mrs. IV. C. King was a Toronto etc., and bring pot-luck lunch. Tea visitor last week. will be provided. Mr. Jack Marrison, Mrs. Mary Mrs. John Wylie and Miss Betty I Morrison, and Mrs. Evelyn Winters, of Brantford, were visitors on Sunday at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Jacques and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Edgar. Mrs. Win. Vanderliil and Linda, of Listowel, were guests, of Mr. and Mrs. Manford Irwin on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Jacklin and family of Brussels, spent Sunday with the latter's family, Mrs. Chas. Kitchen. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Jardine, of Tugaske, Sask., are visiting the form- mer's brother, Mr. Jack Jardine, and Mrs. Jardine and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Amstrrong, Shelburne, spent Sunday at the same home. Mrs. Frances Earngey spent a week with an aunt near Woodstock. Mrs. F, C. Taylor is spending this week with friends in Toronto. Misses Eleanore Stephens, Phyllis Ford, Marguerite Ford, and Helen Strong are holidaying at Port Elgin. Miss Cathie Ford of Tilsonburg was home for the weekend and spent Sunday at the beach, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Mundell and children, Bluevale, called on friends in town Saturday evening. Miss Nellie Longley, of Toronto, visited with Mrs. James Armstrong and other friends from Friday to Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Beecroft and Mr. and Mrs, J. McLean, all of Ed- monton, ivere visitors on Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Anson Thornton. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Miller, Detroit, were recent visitors with the former's mother, Mrs. E. Miller, and Mr. 'and Mrs. Archie Miller. Miss Edna Lawrence, Toronto, .is holidaying at the home of her mother, Mrs. Chas. A large number from this district attended the L.O.L. celebration in Wingham on Saturday. A number alxo went to see the "Shooting Stare" local talent show in the Wingham town hall on Friday and Saturday nights, The proceeds were for L.O.L. at Wingham and the Orange orphan- age at Richmond Hill. Taking part in the show from Gorrie and vicinity were: Mrs. Pearl Kaine, Mrs. S. Zimmerman, Mrs. Luella Sanderson, Mrs. M. Campbell were pleasantly surprised on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary When friends and neighbors gathered to wish them many happy returns and to present them with gifts of silver. The evening was spent play ing euchre and a social time was enjoyed, Miss Beatrice Wade and her friend, Miss B. McKenzie, are on a two two weeks' holiday in Toronto and other points. Some 140 persons received free chest x-rays on Monday, July 7th, when the Mobile Chest X-ray Unit wis in Fordwich. Volunteers assisted under the direction- of the Howick Lions Club. Misses Ethel Reis and Jean Dins- more, recent graduates of Listowel High School, are taking a summer school course in. Toronto and will teach in September, Mr. Amos Denny, of Acton, visited recently with Mrs. Mary Denny. Miss Ruth Gernhaelder, teacher, is on a conducted bus tour- of Western Canada and U.S. Mr. Jack Brown and his bride, the former Kay Duncan, Mount Forest, have returned from a wedding trip to New York and points in Eastern U.S. and are getting settled at their Mrs. Allan Hyndman read a paper on "Salads for Summer", stressing the importance of Vitamin A. Mrs. J. Hutchison read an article on the value of sunshine and of the Vitamins C and D in general health and in pre- vention of rickets and scurvy. Mrs. Hutchison conducted a contest on flowers.
