A unique incident occurred at Ring-
ling Bros. circus when in St, Thomas
recently, which demonstrates that ele-
phants have good memories and last-
ing affections, When Charles Knight
of Fingal, was passing through the
animal tent one of the oldest of, the
herd of elephants began trumpeting,
and the keepers noticed that the ani-
mal was trying to flirt with Mr.
Knight. The keeper invited Mr.
Knight to come into the enclosure,
when a mutual recognition took place.
The elephant wound his trunk around
Itir. Knight's arm and gave other af-
fectionate caresses peculiar to ele-
phants. It turned out that Knight, who
is 72 years of age, was for many years
in his earlier days attached to P. T.
Barnum's circus, and had for years
this same elephant in his charge. it
