TIME TO SMILE
A minister told his flock he had a
"call" to go to another church. One
of the deacons asked how much more
he was offered.
"Three hundred dollars," was the re-
ply.
"Well, I don't blame you for going,"
remarked the deacon, "but you should
be more exact in your language, Par-
son. That isn't a call that's a "raise."

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE
HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Peg:
Summer is almost here and already
the weather is hot, How can you con-
centrate on Latin when you would
much rather go swimming? It isn't
that I don't like Latin, of .course, it's
just that I like swimming so much
better. School is out now and exams
are over but for the past week there
has been a lot of studying going on
in Wingham, The only consolation is
that we are out of school early. We
get a great kick out of seeing the
younger students trudging up the hill
to dear old Public School while we
are enjoying vacation. (There's a
mean streak in all of us it seems).
We are losing two teachers from
W. D, H. S. this year, Mr. Martin is
going to Oshawa and Mr. Maynard to
Orangeville. We are getting new ones
to take their places though.
Will you be able to come to Wing-
ham for a while this summer? It
hasn't changed much since you left
and you will enjoy talking with all
your old friends.
Mr. Madill took some moving pic-
tures of our Cadet Inspection clay.
He is talking of showing them along
with some old ones next year on Open
Night. It will be fun to sec many of
the town's prominent citizens strut-
ting around in uniform won't it?
The annual events of our High
School were very successful this year.
They included Field Day, Commence-
ment, Spring Concert, Open Night,
Cadet Inspection, dances and, of
course, the three sets of exams,
Many of the students are packing
bags and going away for the summer,
Others are,working in Wingham and
still others are taking it easy and
catching up on their French (Hmm, I
wonder).
As soon as school is out in Rockville,
you come to Wingham as fast as you
can, I will give you a detailed report
on the happenings around Wingham
District High School over the past
year, and I will tell you what a suc-
cessful year it has been for everyone
concerned.
Your uncle's cousin,
Catherine Keating.

$PVED TRAP AT CLINTON
Reckless motorists had better be-
ware while passing through Clinton!
Town Council Monday evening ap-
proved a recommendation made by
Chief of Police Joseph Ferrand that
"speed trap" be installed. However,
the town fathers suggested that the
Crown Attorney be consulted regard-
ing the legality of the use of such an
outfit. Aid. L. G. Winter stated that
the idea was put to test in the town
of Mitchell, but when ,the traffic cases
were tried, evidence offered from the
use of a speed trap was thrown out,
"If it will do any good, let's be be-
hind it," said Bert Glidden, who
agreed with Mr. Winter that the
legal stand be clarified first,
"Speeding still is a Problem in town,
and in order to deal with it more ef-
ficiently, I am requesting permission
to install a speed trap," the Chief re-
commended in his 'monthly report,
"The material I shall require includes
a stop watch, air cable, telephone
wire, two batteries and cable. Many
complaints of speeding on both main
highways have been made to me dur-
ing the past month," he said.
The Chief reported that eight traf-
fic accidents had been reported and
investigated, resulting in three charg-
es of careless driving and one of im-
paired driving, Total amount of dam-
age was $706. Five persons were pro-
ceeded against for speeding and one
for failing to stop at the main inter-
secticM, Fines for the month totalled
',385.00-.-Clinton News-Record.
FISH STORY
A 20-inch brown trout was taken
from the Saugeen River at Knechtel's
Dam in Durham last Friday morning.
The four-pound trout was caught
while Dean Holley was bulldozing
some rocks at the channel below the
dam.
Mrs. Harold Atcheson, daughter of
the mill manager, Otto Schaus, was
thoughtful enough to bring the big
catch to the Chronicle office,
Tuesday of this week a 14-inch
speckled trout was taken from the
Saugeen at the same place where the
brown trout was caught, The fish
were so large that a bulldozer •was
used to land them,—DurhamChronicle.
The fanning Mill
by Bob Carbert
Many of our modern homes today,
are heated by oil furnaces, radiators,
or other forced air systems, that keep
the fire burning constantly, and the
temperature regulated. We go into
more and more of the kitchens and
notice that the wood and coal range
that used to be in the corner, has
been replaced by a shiny, white elec-
tric or gas range. No longer are these
kitchens cluttered up by the woodbox
in the corner, or the stove pipe, wend-
ing its way across the kitchen ceiling.
True, there are many farms that still
have the range and the pipes, but
they are getting fewer every day.
As these old ranges pass, we lose
another page in the history of our
civilization. From that black and com-
fortable stove came the finest buns
and cookies, the fattest loaves of
bread, the tastiest slices of toast, and
the best of bacon and eggs. The re-
servoir at the end of the stove was
always a source of hot water for
washing, floor scrubbing, and in the
winter time, it sometimes got hot
enough for the men to shave with.
Usually, however, the shaving water
came from the tea kettle that sim-
mered away all day on the second lid
from the front, all ready for that
extra pot ()I tea, or the dish of warm
water for some beast in the barn with
a colic,
In the winter nights, the woocibox
always caught the shavings, from the
knives of the boys, who whittled to
pass away the time. Sometime it was
a major proposition to keep it filled
when the wind was blowing from the
east, but the tough beech and hard
maple wood managed to keep the cold
weather out, and the warmth in, even
before the days of insulation..
Do you remember the excitement
and fun, when it came time to give
the stove pipes their regular clean-
ing? After breakfast, the stove would
be allowed to cool off, the fire nearly
out. Then, mom would put on a ker-
chief or sunbonnet, an old sack apron
and a pair of Dad's mitts. Dad would
get the furniture moved back, find
a pail or two for the soot, and a stout
