HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Wingham Advance-Times, 1952-06-11, Page 10United Church 1,31.4 Mrs. Chas, Blythe had charge of the June meeting of the Women's Missionary Society in Wingham Un- ited Church, The subject was "Cit- izenship" and Mrs. Blythe pointed out many duties of a good citizen. She also said that no greater challenge had been given to the Christian Church than Communism, telling how members of the W. M. S, might assist in combating it, Mrs, Alex Coutts and Mrs, Wm, Field brought splendid re- ports from the Presbyterial, which had been held in Clinton. A feature of special interest was the reaffiliation of the Canadian Girls in Training group with the Wo- men's Missionary Society, This was under the leadership of Mrs. G. W. Tiffin. The service was led by the the president of the group, Helen Machan, and candles representing health, education, training and family relations were lighted by Mary Hotch- kiss, Mary Louise Towne, Marlene Stainton tnd Mary Frances Currie, Mrs, Tiffin lighted a tall white candle to represent the love of God for men of all races. The vows were received and the girls welcomed by Mrs. G. N. Underwood and Mrs, Roulston. As the next meeting would come on the holiday it was decided to hold it on July 8th, Catholic Women's League The regular meeting of the Catholic Women's League was held in the parish hall of the Sacred Heart Church in Wingham, on Tuesday evening, June 3rd, with 15 members in attendance. The meeting was opened with the prayer led by the president, Mrs. A, Lockridge, The minutes were read by the secretary, Mrs, Bob Clark, and the treasurer's report was given by Mrs. White. Plans were discussed for a bingo to he held sometime during the month of July. Mrs. Tom Rafferty gave a report of the C,W.L. convention, which was held in London last month. It was announced that a gavel would be presented to the C,W.L. by Mr. Ernest of Wingham. A vote of thanks was extended to Mrs.Ernest for this information. Other business took place and the meeting was ad- journed. Mrs. I, Toner took charge of the business period, Ar- rangements were made for packing the bale for overseas relief. The meeting closed with the hymn "I need Thee every hour," after which Miss Preston was remembered in silent prayer and the meeting was closed with the Mizpah Benediction. BIRTHS LEADER-At the Galt Hospital on Sunday, June 8th., to Mr. and Mrs, Don Leader (nee Mildred Farrish), Hespeler, a daughter. TONER-At the Wingham General Hospital, on Wednesday, June 4th., to Mr, and Mrs. Jack Toner, a son, Mrs. E. Hastie visited with Mr. and Mrs. W. C. King on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs, Ken Hastie, Marie and Margaret, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Workman at Brussels. Mrs. Jean MacDonald, Mrs. W. King and Mrs, Ira McLean were visitors at the same home on Tuesday evening. Miss Kathleen Cathers, Toronto spent the week-end holiday at her home and also attended the Cathers 'Winners from the public school at the Field Day in Wroxeter went to Walkerton on Friday where they competed with Bruce coounty win- ners. Margie Hastie came second in the running race. The roll call was an- swered by each member giving the feast day of her patron saint. General Holy Communion Sunday for Sodalists will be June 29th. Spiritual director, Father Durand, outlined the history of the miraculous medal and how Catholics, including Sodalists, wear it in honour of our ,Blessed Mother who appeared in France to Sister Catherine Laboure lof the Daughters of Charity on iNovember 27th, 1830. A medal was struck exactly as the apparition was made to Sister Catherine Laboure. She died in 1876 and was beatified in 11933 and is now Blessed Catherine ILaboure. Nov. 27th. 1830 is the date !celebrated as the Feast of the Miracu- lous Medal, A sing-song was arranged by Misses Martina Willie and Mildred Redman and a dainty lunch served by Misses , Helen Fitzpatrick and Mary Louise Finch. This was the last meeting of the Sodality, until September 22nd. Father ;Durand closed the meeting with pray- er, St. Paul's WA. The regular meeting of St. Paul's W.A. was held in the church parlour on Thursday afternoon, June 4th. The president, Mrs. R. E. Armitage, open- ed the meeting with prayers and conducted the business. The Scripture reading was taken by Mrs. H. L. Parker, The articles for the bale to be sent to the Indian , School at Cardston were on display, A report was presented by Mrs. C, H. Hinde of the Annual Diocesan Meet- ing, which was held in St. John's Church, Kitchener, May 7 and 8. Over 900 women attended the first day and , splendid addresses were given by Bishop Luxton, of Huron and Rev. R. Pierce, Bishop of Athabasca. An !interesting feature was the presenta- tion to Mrs. Calder, President of the I Huron Diocesan Board, for the W.A., !of a Life Membership in the Domin- ion Diocesan Board, The spring Deanery meeting took place in Bayfield on Monday, June 2nd, with a good representation from St. Paul's W.A, Mrs. Swanson of Wingham, Pres. of Huron Deanery, conducted this meeting and the special speaker was Bishop Green- wood of the Yukon. A very full -and interesting report of the proceedings was presented by Mrs. Nash. Follow- ing the closing of the meeting with prayers by Mrs. Parker, a cup of tea was served by Mrs. R. E. Armitage and Mrs. Jack King. St. Paul's Guild The regular meeting of St. Paul's Ladies' Guild was held in the primary room of the church on Thursday af- ternoon, May 29th. The president, Mrs. Miller Davis was in the chair and opened the meet- ing with the members repeating the General Confession and the Lord's Prayer in unison. The minutes of the last meeting were 'adopted as read and the treas- urer's report war given, showing a balance on hand. After consultation with the Board of Management it was decided to re- place the present furnace in the Rec- tory with a new Western Foundry air conditioning unit. The church kitchen has been re- plenished with a further supply of table linen and silverware. It was decided to serve a dinner in the parish room of the church on July 12th, with a request for the co- operation of all the ladies of the con- gregation. The business being completed, the benediction was pronounced and a social half hour spent.
