Co-operation Requested
"I wish to thank the members of
the Lions Clubs, teachers, doctors,
nurses and all others who are assist-
ing in this worth while work," Dr. E.
A. .McMaster, Seaforth, general chair-
man of the Committee. commented.
"The immediate object of this sur-
vey, is to discover children who might
benefit from medical and surgical
treatment, but whose parents are not
in a position to provide such care,'
Dr. McMaster said.
"However, the survey is expected to
ascertain the name of every child in
Huron County handicapped in any
way, irrespective of family financial
considerations. With this end in view,
the full co-operation of the public is
earnestly requested."
The Lions Clubs participating in
the Survey—ten from Huron County
and one from Lambton are:

Case Histories
Miss Elizabeth Wallace, London,
district nurse, Ontario Society for
Crippled Children, has provided the
following typical case histories.
Both Hips Dislocated
A two-year-old child was admitted
to hospital, with a history of limping
since first learning to walk. X-rays
revealed that the child had a congen-
ital dislocation of both hips, The' hips
were reduced and a plaster cast ap7
plied from the waist down and the
child was discharged from hospital.
He returned to the Orthopaedic Clinic
every three months for X-rays and a
change of cast, This continued for a
year and a half and at that time the
casts were discontinued and the child
wore night splints only. Two years
after the first admission to hospital
X-rays were taken, which showed the
dislocation of the hipS had been cor-
rected and the little boy is now able
to run and play with the rest of his
playmates.
A Lions Club sponsored this child's
treatment.
Cerebral Palsy
A' bright-eyed attractive ,ittle girl
was born with cerebral palsy. For the
first few years of her life she had
WESTFIELD
Mr. and Mrs, 'Beak of Goderich and
Miss Jessica Boak of Stratford visited
on Saturday with Mrs, Fred Cook.
Mr. and Mrs. Beak were leaving for
their honle at Bruno, Sasit„ on Mon-
day.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Campbell,
Hugh and Lois visited on Monday
with 11/fr. and Mrs, Victor Campbell of
Owen Sound, Lois remained for a
week's. visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Logan and Ralph
of Belgrave, visited on Thursday with
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey McDowell,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith and
very little speech, was unable to walk
and lied very little use of her hands
and arms, When she was about three
years old she began to take a few
staggering steps alone and tried to
grasp toys with her unsteady hands.
This little girl was examined at Hos-
pital for Sick Children, Toronto, and
had an intelligence test taken, which
showed that she was mentally alert,
Regular physiotherapy and speech
therapy was advised by the doctor.
One year later she was admitted to
the Cerebral Palsy Treatment Centre
at Woodeden. For the next two years
this little girl had regular treatment
under the direction of a professional
staff, She was able to walk much bet-
ter, her speech had improved and she
is now attending a regular public
school. This little girl will never walk
or talk as well as the other children at
school, but she has made remarkable
progress in spite of her handicap,
Club Feet
This little girl, now. 13 years old,
was born with bilateral club feet,
Treatment started early for her. She
was brought into the Orthopaedic
clinic before she was one month old
and a series of plaster casts were ap-
plied to her feet. These casts were
changed weekly, each time, bringing
the twisted feet closer to the normal
position. Her feet were resistant to
treatment and the casting was con-
tinued over a period of years. From
plaster casts she went on to braces
designed to hold the feet in position.
Daily stretching and manipulation of
the feet were carried out and the
child attended the Physiotherapy De-
partment regularly. The feet remained
resistant to treatment and several
operations were performed until the
feet were brought as near as possible
to the normal' position. This girl now
walks well, without braces, and with
only slight shoe alterations.
Absence of Tibia
A 12-year-old boy has congenital
absence of the tibia of both legs. He
wore appliances which enabled him to
play about and to attend school daily.
As he was becoming too heavy for
these, it was necessary to amputate
the legs above the knees and he is
now wearing. 'artificial limbs and
walks very'.ivell. This boy was spell-
cored by a Huron County Lions Club.
Mr. and Mrs, Melvin Taylor attended
the 82nd birthday pelebration, of their

sels.
