Crusaders lose one,win one on weekend The Crusaders were back on the road last Friday as they travelled to Palmerston for a game against the 81’s. Brussels took a first period lead as they scored the only goal of the period when Jason Goodall scored the goal with just over a minute left in the period with Dave Harding drawing the assist on the play. Sports 8 games in 8 days drains Blyth Pee Wees BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Legion Pee Wees finished their schedule before the Christmas break as they participat­ ed in the Legion Zone Tournament hosted by the Blyth Legion and whipped Milverton in league play 7-0. Blyth opened the Legion Tourney on Saturday, December 15 as they humbled Lucknow 9-1. Brian Mc- Nichol led the way with a hat-trick and Michael Salverda chipped in with a pair. Ryan Chamney record­ ed a power play goal and notched three assists. Peter Craig scored on a long shot from the point as well as garnering two assists. Henry Bos also notched a power play goal and added two assists. Christopher Howson closed out the scoring late in the game with an assist to Benjie Hakkers. Brad Anderson, with two, Jason Rutledge and Greg Toll rounded out the scoring stats with well deserved assists. This early morning game launch­ ed Blyth into the Championship game late in the afternoon against an always strong Ripley squad. Although Blyth had their chances early, they faded as the game progressed and lost an uninspired contest to Ripley 5-0. This finished an eight games in eight days stfetch with the result not totally unexpected. Blyth hosted Milverton in league play on Monday, December 17 where they avenged an earlier 2-1 loss with a well-played 7-0 white­ wash. Goaltenders Chris Lee and Michael c'e Jong once again proved their net worth as they shared their seventh shutout of the season. Brian McNichol opened and closed the scoring on his way to recording another hat-trick, includ­ ing two power play goals. Player of the week award went to Michael Salversa as ms unsemsn passing accounted for his three assists. Benjie Hakkers, Brad Anderson, and Jason Rutledge scored Blyth’s remaining goals while Jason Rut­ ledge, with two, Ryan Chamney, Shawn Hakkers, Christopher How- son and Peter Craig added assists. The team worked well together and notched the win by taking advantage of Milverton’s undiscip- plined play. A much needed break is now in order before the team participates in the Kincardine Silver Stick Tournament between Christmas and New Year’s. Blyth Tykes win 1, lose 1 The Blyth Tykes hosted Zurich on Dec. 8 and won with a 6-3 score. Jeff Carter opened the scoring for Blyth with Matt Anderson record­ ing the next five goals. Derek Cook made his debut in net for this game. Travelling to Clinton Dec. 15 found the Blyth Tykes against strong opposition. Blyth’s six goals, scored by Matt Anderson weren’t enough to defeat Clinton the end result being Clin­ ton 16 and Blyth 6. The Tykes all played well in front of goalie Derek Cook. Next game scheduled is Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. in Blyth against Belgrave. The Cruaders made it a two goal lead eight minutes into the second period when Trev Pocaluyko set up Kevin Deitner for the goal. Palmer­ ston scored the next goal when Dan Hill and Rick Hembly set up Lawrence Miller to cut the lead to one goal. Brussels regained the two-goal lead a minute and 30 seconds later and Paul Robinson and Dave Montgomery combined , to set up Brian Ten Pas for the goal. The 81’s once again made it a one-goal game with just over three minutes left in the period when Mike MacDougall scored with Hembly and Kevin Peffer drawing the assist. The period ended 3-2 in the Crusaders favour. Palmerston tied the game up on a power play when Miller and Hill set up Kyle Reading for the score. The 81’s took their first lead of the game two minutes later when Rodger Walls and Kevin Weppler set up Robin Williamson for the goal. They made it a two-goal lead 10 minutes later when MacDougall set up Peffer for the goal. Brussels cut the lead to one when they pulled goalie Mike Smith for the extra man and it worked out as Trev Pocaluyko and Paul Robinson drew assists on a goal scored by Dave Montgomery, but that was as close as they got as the game ended 5-4 in Palmerston favour. Saturday night saw the Crusa­ ders play to Arthur Tigers for home contest. Arthur opened the scoring in the game as they scored three goals in the first three minutes of play. Brussels got one goal back at the eight minute mark when Jeff Espensen and Brian Ten Pas combined to set up Dave Mont­ gomery for the goal. Arthur how­ ever added two more goals before the end of the period to give them a 5-1 lead after one period. The Tigers made it a five-goal lead four minutes into the second. Brussels came back with a goal of their own when Ten Pas and Montgomery set up Paul Robinson for the goal. The Crusaders then cut Arthur’s lead to three when Ten Pas and Montgomery set up Dave Stephenson for the scoring marker. Montgomery scored his second of the game 30 seconds later with Ten Pas and Robinson drawing assists on the play. The Crusaders made it a one goal game when Stephenson got his second of the game when he finished off a play set up by Brian Campbell and Ten Pas. Brussels tied the game at 6-6 just 10 seconds later when Stephensqp and Mark Harding set up Campbell for the goal. Brussels then took the lead with just 17 seconds left in the period when Espensen set up- Campbell for his second goal of the game. The second period ended 7-6 in the favour of the Crusaders. Brussels started the scoring just 57 seconds into the third period with Mark Harding scoring an unassisted goal. They then made it a three-goal lead just 19 seconds later when Ken Higgins scored on a shot from tire point with Campbell drawing the only assist on the play. Dave Montgomery completed his hat-trick on the next goal just 16 seconds after the Higgins goal with Ten Pas and Robinson drawing assists on-the goal. Arthur came back with agoal to cut the lead to three but that was as close as they came as Brussels added one more goal with two minutes left in the game when Ten Pas and Mont­ gomery set up Robinson for his second goal of the game. The final score ended -up being 11-7 in the Crusaders favour. The Crusaders see action Friday night when they travel to Monkton for an 8:30 game.
