Blyth woman remembers Christmas Community support The Ladies Auxiliary to the Bly th Canadian Leg ion continues its support of the Blyth and District Community Centre. Murray Musty, Community Centre Board chairman accepts a cheque from Brenda Finlayson. The Auxiliary donated $2,500 toward the purchase of a tractor for the arena and $5,000 for chairs for the arena auditorium. Mrs. Ruby Rich of Queen St.-in Blyth tells what Christmas was like when she was a young girl. She says that when she was very small, the family would awaken on Christmas Day, get dressed and all sit down to hot oatmeal for break fast. After, they would go to their stockings and find the eagerly anticipated orange and hard candy. Mrs. Rich said it was the only day of the y^ar they ever got those treats. After the men finished the chores, her father would hitch up his team to the bob sleigh. “My brother used to have the sleigh shining like a jewel,” said Mrs. Rich. She remembers the horses were Prince and Skipper. A gravel box, which her father used to carry wood from the bush, was filled for this occasion with fresh, clean wheat straw. “Mother would heat flat irons and bricks on the stove and wrap them in thick newspaper. Then she would put these on the straw and the seven of us would cover up with thick quilts. Dad, mother and our invalid sister would sit in the front and cover up with buffalo robes and we headed for our aunt’s and uncle’s for Christ mas dinner. It was about 15 or 20 miles we had to travel but we were as warm as toast all the way.” The horses wore hip bells and bells fastened around their neck onto the tongue of the sleigh. The team often had to lunge through high snowbanks, definitely not something we seem to have in our present Christmases. When the family arrived at their destination, they would, Mrs. Rich said, arrive to the aroma of goose roasting nice and brown in the oven. “We had all the trimmings with it and ended the meal with cake and pudding,” says she. After the meal was over every one helped clean up then asked to listen to the old gramophone. “First, though, we had to do what we performed at our Christmas concert. I always had a recitation to say or a song to sing. Then we would sing some songs together and listen to the gramophone.” “When it was time to depart, we hitched the sleigh back up to the horses, and travelled home in time for evening chores. Now at 79 I often recall my old-fashioned child hood Christmases.” HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION OF ONTARIO The Heart Facts Is smoking really linked to heart disease and stroke?
