Shopping spree Candace and Amanda Bearrs of Biyth give each other a hand with their Christmas shopping at the United Church’s Children’s Shopping Spreeon Saturday afternoon. There was an excellent selection of inexpensive gifts for youngsters to buy and Mom and Dad could sit and relax with coffee and goodies while they waited for the kids to finish shopping. Helping out Swinging Seniors entertain at Huronview About 20 Swinging Seniors from Biyth journeyed down to Huron view on Dec. 12 to help them celebrate their December birthdays and to bring them some entertain ment. President, John Hesselwood wel comed everyone and called on guests, Don and Mary Vair from Belgrave. Don opened with a poem entitled “Hugs” and then thrilled everyone with his skills at the piano. He entertained with several Christmas Carols with everyone joining in the singing. His wife Mary read several lovely poems. They finished their part of the program by singing two beautiful duets. Four gentlemen from Biyth took over the second half. They were Jim Lawrie, Lloyd Walden, Millar Richmond and Harvey McDowell with Ella Richmond at the piano. They supplied many toe-tapping tunes and ended with the quartette singing “Silent Night” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. John closed the meeting and a delicious lunch of cookies, squares and tea were served to the resi dents by the Biyth ladies. Biyth Lions President Steve Howson (right) presents a donation from the club to Murray Musty, chairman of the board of the Biyth and District Community Centre. The Lions gave $5,000 toward the purchase of a new tractor to run the arena flooder and $8,000 toward the installation of steel about the outside of the building. Public sags thanks to RIDE teams Continued from Page 6 “The public does have a better attitude about spot checks, now,” said Const. Sabin. “Often people will thank us when we stop them for keeping drunk drivers off the road.” He says that people are car pooling and taking buses when they party now because they are coming to realize that the only guarantee is a sober driver. “There is nothing a person can do to sober up once they have had to much to drink. Time is the only factor. Food will slow down the absorption of the alcohol but then it just takes longer to dissipate,” he said. The host has a responsibility as well to see that people don’t drink too much. There can be no criminal action taken against them should an accident happen as the result of someone having had too much to drink at their home, but a civil action can be brought against them. If there is no other way to stop someone from getting in a car, when you know they shouldn’t, the officers agreed that the host should feel no remorse in notifying the police and asking them to get the driver off the road. “We will probably, in a situation like that, just make sure they get home. I think the host in this instance should be commended for being very responsible,” said Const. Scott. “The good news is the days of the falling-down drunk are dimin ishing greatly,” he said. “Very seldom do we see someone in that bad a shape anymore. The majority of people blow warnings now.” “The best way to judge is if you have to think about it,” added Const. Sabin. “I you have to think about whether or not you’re alright to drive v you’re probably not.” 65th from ALL the other women in your life!!!
