Blyth council saves paper
by not supportiny
waste resolution
NOTICE -
Library donation
Blyth Reeve Albert Wasson (right) accepts a cheque from
Janice Henry of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Blyth Legion. The
$5,000 gift to the village will help with the renovations needed
to turn the north wing of Memorial Hall (background) into the
new Blyth Library. Work is expected to begin soon on the
project.
Blyth Council did its bit for ;
conservation of paper at its Dec. 12 i
meeting by not supporting a resolu- i
tion to cut down on waste.
Councillors agreed with the sen
timents expressed in the resolution '
circulated from the Township of (
Himsworth near Callander but
decided it would be a waste of time
to support the resolution and send •
it on to Ontario Environment
Minister Ruth Grier. “It’s like
motherhood,” Reeve Albert Was
son said of the resolution.1
“We’re not going to start send
ing letters here and there and
everywhere,” Councillor Dave Lee
said. “What’s the point of it.”
The resolution called for the
increase of the deposit on refillable
containers between 30 and 50 per
cent to ensure more were returned;
a reduction or banning of non-re-
fundable containers; provide incen
tives for service stations to dis
pense bulk washer fluid and radia
tor anti-freeze; abolish shrink wrap
and encourage manufacturers to
use environmentally friendly pro
ducts.
“All five points are excellent,”
Councillor Steven Sparling said,
especially the one on packaging
which he said is out of control.
Council decided, however, to take
no action on the resolution.
