Blyth PeeWees finish Zurich tournament in second place BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Legion Pee Wees competed in the Zurich Pee Wee Tournament last weekend where they played solid two-way hockey on their way to being tournament runners-up. Blyth completely dominated in their first game on Friday night as they scored three short-handed and two power-play goals on their way to steamrolling London Southwest 9-0. Goaltenders Chris Lee and Blyth Atoms defeated in A9 championship game The Blyth Atoms, won a tough hard-fought 2-1 defensive game against Mitchell II in league action, Sprouts lose first game of season The Brussels Sprouts lost their first game of the year with 30 seconds left in the game. The Sprouts have a 6 win, 1 loss record so far this season. The Sprouts lost their first game Satur­ day against Clinton 6-5. Nolan Krotz scored the first Sprout goal. Andy Vanbeek and Ian Thompson notched second period goals. Both Vanbeek and Thompson scored in the third. This game had every­ thing: good goaltending as Mat­ thew McCall played super goal for the Sprouts and end-to-end action that had both teams hustling with good scoring chances. This game was not decided until just 30 seconds remained to give the visiting Clinton team a 6-5 victory. Parents applauded the efforts of both teams. r Whan thing* yon can take a bit* out of inflation in th* Classified* Michael de Jong held the fort between the pipes while Blyth’s big line of Bos, McNichol and Cham- ney accounted for 16 scoring points. Ryan Chamney led the way with a hat-trick while also chipping in with three assists. Henry Bos also recorded the hat-trick and added two assists with Brian McNichol scoring two goals and assisting on three more. Benjie Hakkers notched Blyth’s other goal while defenceman Peter last Thursday in Blyth. Mitchell opened the scoring, early in the game and held a 1-0 lead until the third period. Jeff Cowan tied the score early in the third on a nice solo effort. The third period, Blyth missed many good chances, with end-to- end play. Jeff Cowan jumped on a loose puck for the winning assists. A solid team effort with Scott Bromley doing the job between the pipes. The following night, Friday, Dec. 7, Blyth travelled to Zurich to take part in their annual tournament, and meet the same Mitchell team again. This game was almost a repeat with Blyth winning again 2-1. Blyth scored first this game with Darryl Bromley and Michael Hag- gitt connecting on a pretty passing play early in the hockey game. However, Mitchell fought back and tied the game 1-1 early in the second period. Darryl Bromley tallied the winn­ ing goal, jumping on a rebound from a Greg Blok blue-line blast, with three minutes remaining in the game. Shane Burkholder play­ ed a solid game between the pipes for Blyth. BLYTH 6 - HENSALL 3 The Blyth Atoms got up early Sunday morning to do battle against the top team in their league, in their second game of the tournament. Blyth came out with their best effort of the year so far and out-skated Hensail 6-3/ Michael Courtney socred early tipping in the Jeff Cowan pass, to get Blyth rolling. Michael Haggitt put Blyth up 2-0 working the give and go with Darryl Bromley. Jeff Cowan tallied his first goal of the game on a set-up by Michael Courtney, but Hensail also replied Craig played perhaps his strongest game of the year as he added three assists. Blyth met a determined Zurich squad on Sunday morning in game two although the result was the same as Blyth shaded their hosts 4-2. Brian McNichol found Jason Rutledge deep in the slot and Jason opened the scoring in the first minute of the game. Brad Ander­ son picked up a rebound near the crease and gave Blyth a 2-0 lead with one. Jeff Cowan put Blyth up 4-1 with Mark Wilson feeding him a pass, but again Hensail replied with a goal. Michael Courtney picked up a loose puck to score his second of the game, making the score 5-2 Blyth. Jeff Cowan tallied Blyth’s sixth goal, giving him a hat-trick putting this game out of reach for Hensail. Hensail scored once more with Mark Bell scoring his second for Hensall. Blyth shut the door with assists to Jason Rutledge and Michael Salverda. Zurich cut the lead in half before the period ended but Brian Mc­ Nichol scored the only goal in the second frame to restore Blyth’s two-goal lead. Brian’s power-play goal proved to be the winner after a perfect set up from Brad Anderson. Zurich’s persistence paid off early in the third period as they once again closed the gap to 3-2. Shortly thereafter Christopher Howson scored on a screened shot and held on to a much deserved 6-3 win. Scott Bromley did a super job in net supporting a fine team effort. LOSE IN FINAL This win put Blyth in the A Championship game later in the day against a very strong, well rested Ilderton team. Blyth gave it their best, but came up short, missing many good scoring chan­ ces. But it was a super weekend for the Blyth Atoms, Zurich Tourna­ ment A Finalists. from the slot for another two-goal lead. The goal came as a result of another fine set up from Brad Anderson. It was a total team effort as Blyth advanced to the championship game against Dorchester with this hard earned 4-2 victory. Although Blyth put up a fight, Dorchester claimed the Champion­ ship with a convincing 6-1 win. Dorchester built a 3-0 lead before Blyth finally broke the goose egg in the second period. Brian McNichol slipped the puck between the goalie’s legs with assists to Henry Bos and Ryan Chamney. Goaltender Chris Lee kept the Legion Pee Wees in the game with some solid netminding and the team had every opportunity to tie the game up except for some bad bounces. Dorchester put the game out of reach with three goals in the third period to claim the championship. Full credit goes to the entire Legion Pee Wee team as they played sound hockey on their way to being tournament runners-up. Congratu­ lations also goes to the Blyth Atoms who were runners-up in the Atom division. HENSALL LIVESTOCK SALES LTD.
