Sports Crusaders make it to Blyth Novice team loses, ties ‘B’ finals in Drayton tournee On Saturday the Crusaders tra­ velled to Drayton to play the Teeswater Falcons in the Drayton tournament. Teeswater opened the scoring just three and a half minutes into the first period when Rick Schiestel and Kevin Johnston combined to set up Joe Zettler for the goal. The first period ended 1-0 for the Falcons. They made it a 2-0 lead just ten seconds into the second period when Tracey Kennedy scored on a play from Mike Lang and Paul Cronin. Brussels came back and cut the lead in half when Kevin Deitner set up Ken Cousins for the goal. The second period ended 2-1 in Teeswater’s favour. The Crusaders came back to tie the game up at two just two minutes into the third when Ken Cousins scored once again with Mark Harding drawing the assist on the goal. That was all the scoring in the third as the score was 2-2 after three periods of play. Th teams then had to play a five-minute, sudden-death period and there was just 51 seconds left to play when Mike Lang and Tracey Kennedy set up Brian Weber for the winning goal to give Teeswater a 3-2 victory. Brussels played the second game of the tournament on Sunday when they faced Grand Valley. The Crusaders opened the scor­ ing halfway through the period when Troy Pocaluyko drew an assist on a goal by Brian Ten Pas. Just over two minutes later Brussels made it 2-0 when Ten Pas and Pete Goodall set up Rob Cardiff for the goal. Dave Stephen­ son made it a three-goal lead when he scored on a wrist shot with Cardiff and Kevin Deitner drawing the assists on the goal. The period ended 3-0 in the Crusaders favour. There was only one goal scored in the second and it was scored by Grand Valley to make the score 3-1 after two periods of play. Brussels regained their three- goal lead four minutes into the third when Ken Higgins scored on a slap shot from the blue line, the goal was unassisted. Grand Valley came back strong scoring the next two goals of the game to make it a one-goal difference. The Crusaders then increased it to a two-goal lead when Paul Robinson and Troy Pocaluyko combined to set up Dave Mont­ gomery for the goal. Grand Valley cut the lead to one once again with two minutes left in the game but that was as close as they got as Brussels held on for a 5-4 victory to put them in the B Championship game. The B Championship game saw the Crusaders take the ice against the Palmerston 81’s. Palmerston took the early lead as they scored just 40 seconds into the first period when Kyle Reading set up Dan Hill for the goal. The rest of the period as well as the second period were scoreless with both teams having good chances to score. Palmerston took a 2-0 lead seven minutes into the third period when Kent Norman and Dave Craig set up Mark Leslie for a power-play goal. The Crusaders made it a 2-1 hockey game when they scored with 15 seconds left in the game with goalie Ron Smith on the bench for an extra forward. Rob Cardiff and Ken Higgins set up Jason Goodall for the goal. The game ended with the 81’s winning 2-1. This weekend the Crusaders travel to Palmerston for a Friday night game at 8:15. Then on Saturday they will play host to the Arthur Tigers for an 8 p.m. game. Getting a big help with a little coaching is Brittany Kellington of the Brussels Sprouts who practised with the Brussels Bulls Sunday morning. Bulls’ captain Ron Strome took time out to help. The Novice Rep. team hosted Stephen Twp. on Thursday, Nov. 29 and skated to a 2-2 tie. The visitors got on the scoreboard at the 8:10 mark of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Jamie Black scored early in the second, to tie the game. Allen Gibbons and Jeremy Van Amers- foort got the assists. Play went end to end giving both teams chances, but Stephen Twp. managed to take a 2-1 lead late in the period. Blyth’s goalie, Bryce Toll, along with the defenceman, Jeremy Sal­ lows, Joey Schmidt, Jonthan Kochis and Chris Dunbar, manag- • ed to keep Stephen Twp. off the . scoreboard during the third period. But Stephen Twp. didn’t have the same luck, with 1:50 left to play Chris Carter scored, assisted by Kyle Anderson, the game ended in Continued on page 13
