Speed limit increase to 90 km supported Ontario Traffic will soon be whizzing along Huron county highways at 90 km. per hour...and doing it legally. Huron County Council Thursday approved a motion, by a 29-4 margin, to authorize preparation of a bylaw to increase speed limits from 80 to 90 km. per hour. Although the actual bylaw must still be approved by council, Grey Township Reeve Leona Armstrong, one of the most vocal opponents of the plan, admitted later there’s Brownies enroll 11 Tweenies On December 6, 11 tweenies became Brownies to the 1st Blyth Brownie Pack. Joining Brownies were: Becky Archambault, Diana Bakelaar, Julie Cowan, Kelly-Ann Dalton, Christina McLure, Robin Mason, Rachel de Boer, Amanda Fidom, Rosalyn Hartman, Sara Plant and Ashley Taylor. All new members were assigned to their sixes with Jennifer Jack- son, Sharon Hartman, Kristy Blair, and Lisa Kelly being appointed as sixers, Bonnie Stewart, Elizabeth Sauve, Christina McLure and Julie Cowan being appointed as secon ders in the sixes. Enrolment ceremonies were con ducted under the direction of Janet Cameron, Radar District Commis sioner from Clinton. The Brownies under the gui dance of Mary Lou Stewart, Heath er Jackson and Stacey Plant have been working on their Book Lover, Needleworker and Hostess badges. Plans for the winter months include Canada, Winter Adventure and Snowshoer badges. The group will close for the fall session on December 12 with a small Christ mas meeting and resume again on January 9. little chance the change of speed limits won't go into effect given the size of the vote. Councillor Armstrong made a well-researched presentation to council against the increase in speed limits. She noted that higher speeds mean higher fuel consump tion and with the price of fuel up 20 per cent in the last six months, it would mean savings, she said. The higher speeds also meant an increased possibility of severe acci dents, she said. At 80 km. per hour it takes a car 136.8 feet to come to a stop but it takes 169.2 feet to come to a stop from 90 km. per hour. And since many people routinely go 10 km. per hour over the speed limit, at 100 km. per hour it takes 202.2 feet to stop. She noted a survey conducted on CKNX radio where only one caller was in favour of higher speed limits. In her own personal survey she had also found McCAIN’S 1 KG assorted cuts FRENCH Uli FRIES aW few people in favour of the 90 km. per hour limit, she said. She was supported by Clinton Reeve Bea Cooke whose council had sent a letter protesting the higher limits and by Goderich Deputy Reeve John Doherty who said that most people are already going 90 and would now speed up to 100. But others took the opposite side of the argument. Morris Township Reeve Doug Fraser said that at 90 km. per hour he might be able to keep up with salt trucks instead of constantly being passed. He ar gued that there would be fuel savings at 90 km. per hour since many cars didn’t go into overdrive until faster than 80. Hullett Reeve Tom Cunningham asked county engineer Denis Mer rall about the experience of Middlesex where limits are already at 90. Mr. Merrall said he didn’t see a difference between the two counties. Middlesex does have a lower speed limit on urban fringes, he said and Huron would look carefully at that as well. The majority of accidents take place not on the open road but where cars are turning. Mr. Merrall said he had talked to the O.P.P. at Mount Forest and learned Huron already has a higher fatality rate than Middlesex. Most of the fatalities were not related to the posted speed, he said. If speed was involved it was a much greater speed than the legal limit. In a recorded vote only council lors Armstrong, Cooke, Doherty and Reeve Harry Worsell of Goder ich voted against increasing the limits. Councillor Worsell added some humour to the situation by thinking for a moment, then cast ing one of his two Goderich votes against the increase and one for it.
