The wet fall conditions have
made drain problems a headache
for Blyth homeowners and for
Village Council as it tries to decide
who is responsible for the pro
blems.
At the Nov. 27 meeting of village
council Village Works foreman
John Rinn told the story of two
backed up drain problems in the
village which his department had
helped to clear up. In one case,
councillors felt the village should
bear the cost of repairs because
construction by the village might
have caused the problem.
In the other case, in the Drum
mond and Coombs St. area, coun-
cillors felt that although village
crews had helped find the source of
the problem, the village shouldn’t
bear the costs because the problem
was in a privately installed drain.
“To the best of our knowledge the
village never gave permission to
hook (the drain) in (to the munici
pal drainage system),’’ Reeve Al
bert Wasson said.
Councillor Steven Sparling poin
ted out that the village’s consulting
engineer had told council that the
village is not responsible for drain
ing people’s basements and
shouldn’t be involved in providing
outlets for cellar drains.

Renovations haven’t started on
the new Blyth Library Branch space
in the north wing of Memorial Hall
although some of the partitions in
the space have been removed.
Meanwhile, however, council has
started planning for renovations to
the old library space to expand the
municipal office and provide space
for the Extended Service Officer of
the Ontario Provincial Police.
Meanwhile renovations continue
upstairs in the municipal building
where the Blyth Centre for the Arts
and Blyth Masonic Lodge are
co-operating in renovating the
space. Concern was expressed at
the meeting because of water
getting into the back end (west
side) of the building and councillors
were to inspect the building.
