Brussels People This Sunday evening the sounds of Christmas will be alive in the streets of Brussels as young people from the area come carolling. Teams of youths will be travelling through Brussels as part of the Ecumenical Food Drive. In addition to singing they will be blitzing the neighbourhood asking for donations of food, toys or warm clothing to be given to needy people. The group will be meeting at 7:30 at Melville Presbyterian Church to get organized then will be returning there for pop and pizza. All teenagers are welcome to participate in this good cause. So pass the word around and everyone get ready with a donation when the caroilers arrive at your door, sharing the Christmas spirit. Jim Mair had as visitors this past weekend Mary Lou Ackerman of Don Mills, Wanda Power of Picker ing and his daughters Joan Mair of Whitby and Norma Roger of Ajax. Brussels outside workers get raise Brussels Village outside em ployees Monday night agreed to a wage increase that will see them get a four per cent raise plus improvements in benefits that will bring the increase to about six per cent. The employees had asked for a six per cent increase to catch them up with municipal employees else where, plus having the village pick up the entire cost of benefits. Council and Public Utilities Com mission met in committee of the whole Monday night to discuss the request then, when the meeting became open again, countered with the offer of four per cent and full benefits. After taking a few min utes to consider, the employees agreed. Mennonite youth group meets Melville celebrates season Melville Presbyterian Church in Brussels has lots of exciting things planned for the Christmas season, as we remember that Christmas is really all about Christ’s coming into our world. This coming Sunday is the ‘annual’ Mitten tree service. Many in the congregation have worked hard to knit warm clothing for those who may need it, and others have brought food and toys. During the service the children will decorate the tree with all the mittens etc. and put the food and toys under neath. All these gifts are taken to the Wingham drop-off point for the Children’s Aid Society of Huron County to distribute. The congre gation continues this concern for the needy in the evening, as Melville hosts the ecumenical youth event. Please be ready for young people to come carolling to your neighbourhood, and to your door asking for gifts of food. It should be a great time of fun, and such an important part of the mission of the Church. Lots of Christmas meetings are planned, especially the special December meetings of the WMS and the Ladies Guild. The Sunday school children are getting excited about their Christmas concert, to be presented in the morning, Sunday, December 16. The child ren will present “The New Toy’’. Christmas means beautiful music. At Melville both the Senior and Junior Choirs are working hard. The Junior Choir will sing during worship, and a special presentation at Callander Nursing Home on December 16. The Senior choir is practising a challenging and meaningful Cantata, for the morning of December 23: “God’s Perfect Gift’’. On Christmas eve, Melville will host the service this year, shared with Brussels United. Special dra matic message, along with music and a time for the children will be the worship experience that night. During the Advent and Christmas season, families in Melville are participating in the ‘Penny a meal’ program, which focuses attention to those less fortunate, all around our world. Moneys collected from little sacrifices made in the daily routine, will be sent to Presbyter ian World Service and Develop ment. At Knox Presbyterian Bel grave, the sister church, a Christ mas sermon series will be heard through the season, from Dec. 2 to Dec. 30, entitled “Christmas Music”. Rebekahs meet The regular meeting of Morning star Rebekah Lodge, Brussels was held on Tuesday, November 27 with Noble Grand Sister Mary Lowe presiding. There was a good attendance. At this meeting a donation was made to the Friendship House of Huron County, Goderich. Plans were made to attend the Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner sponsored by the Western Star Lodge I.O.O.F. A committee was formed to plan a float for the Santa Claus parade, co-sponsored by the Oddfellow and Rebekah Lodges. The first Sunday of Advent was celebrated at the Brussels Menno nite Fellowship with the Dettweiler family lighting the advent candle and giving short readings. Mark Hiller was worship leader. Pastor Gordon Bauman delivered the sermon based on Luke 14: 12-24 on the theme “The Table - a Place for All”. He stressed that following Jesus’ example we must all be more inclusive and thus less exclu sive when exercising our gifts of hospitality. We were challenged to introspect on our motives for entertaining. He also pointed out that we’re given a choice of whether or not we participate in the great feast, it’s there for all, if we choose to accept the invitation. The adult video series continued at the church Sunday evening. The youth enjoyed supper and the weekly session at Linda and Elwin Garland’s. The youth were pleased with the results of their collection of food at EMA on Saturday. Saturday evening, Dec. 8 the fellowship hall will be open to the community for another coffee house.
