THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1990. w BY LORIE ANN BLACK AND SARAH McARTER On Wednesday, November 14 parents were invited to attend a program called “Science is Happening Here’’ from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Twenty interested and enthu­ siastic people attended. The purpose of this evening was to let parents see what their children are doing in Science at school by having them participate. Some of the activities included water displacement, computers and bugs. As well our Science notebooks were on display. On Nov. 14, Brussels Public School hosted the annual Great Owl Friendship Club meets On Wednesday, Nov. 21 the usual bountiful pot luck luncheon preceded the Friendship Club meeting being held in the Legion Auditorium at 12:30 p.m. After the singing of “0 Canada”, the secretary’s and trea­ surer’s reports were read and approved. The Christmas meeting will be held on Dec. 19 at 12:30 p.m. sharp with the pot luck luncheon at the Legion. Martha Logan and Verna Thomas agreed to purchase the prizes and be respon­ sible for the entertainment. Sarah Stephenson made the motion, se­ conded by Verna Tunney, to have a gift exchange. At that meeting the customary admission fee will be abolished. Gerald Exel volunteered to deliver the Christmas Story. On motion by Mary Lowe and Verna Tunney the group will send a donation of $25 to Town and Minister says retail tax won’t be stacked on GST The Honourable Shelley Wark- Martyn, Ontario Minister of Revenue, recently introduced legis­ lation at the opening of the Legislature to ensure that the Ontario Retail Sales Tax (RST) is not stacked on top of the oncoming federal Goods and Service Tax (GST). “Our first piece of legislation fulfills our commitment to reverse the previous government’s decision when it increased provincial reven­ ues by stacking RST on GST,” said Wark-Martyn. The Minister repeated her assur­ ance that consumers can obtain refunds from vendors or the Mini­ stry’s Retail Sales Tax Branch if they have been charged RST on Top of GST for goods and services to be delivered after December 31, 1990. She also said the government would take action to clear up any confusion about the GST and RST. “My Ministry has mailed notices to over 300,000 RST vendors,” Wark- Martyn said. “A second stage in our public information program will begin right after the legislation is approved. We will distribute a special bulletin and place news­ paper advertisements to explain the no-stacking decision to all vendors, business people and the public.” Brussels P.S. News Book Fair. There were books for all ages and tastes. There were also book marks and posters as well. Our school takes its profit back in books for the school library. We would like to thank the people who purchased books at the Book Fair, for supporting this event. The grade 7/8 class has been selling cheese for the last three weeks. The cheese that we have been selling comes from the Gay Lea Cheese Factory in Teeswater. The class was selling the cheese to raise money for class trips, foster child project, etc., the list goes on. We thank everyone who purchased cheese from the class, for helping with this fundraising project. In intermediate noon-hour volleyball, the Rodents are in first place and in junior the Great Volliers are in first place. On November 27 the grades 3-5 will travel to Howick Central Public School to see a drama presentation called “Jim and Dave’s Awesome Environmental Adventure”. Heritage crafters Achievement Night for the Brussels I 4-H club for “Our Heritage” project was held at the Brussels Library Nov. 19. Club members bringing crafts were (front row, left to right) Veronica Grobbink, Teresa Bridge, Becky McLaughlin; (back) leader Kathy Bridge, Jacquie Seili and Lanette Todd Absent were Sandra Bridge, Becky Davidson and Peggy Keffer, leader. Country Homemakers. Adah Smith moved and seconded by Verna Thomas to forward a cheque for $25 to the Brussels Santa Claus Parade. To show appreciation to the Legion for the use of their auditorium every month the club agreed on a motion by Sarah Stephenson and Gerald Exel to donate $100 to the Legion. It was moved by Gerald Exel and Mary Lowe that Ethel Brewer purchase an additional 100 place mats. A “get well” card was signed by all present to be sent to Annie Engel who has been hospitalized. Euchre was played with the following winners: high lady, Ruby Steiss; high man, Albert Quipp; low lady, Doris Hooper; low man, Marguerite Sanderson; most zeros, Verna Thomas.
