Christmas bureau opens to help disadvantaged Making Christmas special for those less fortunate, has been the work of volunteers with the Huron County Christmas Bureau for over 25 years. Sponsored by the Children’s Aid Society it is a private and confiden tial service that is designed to preserve the dignity of needy people in the community. The Bureau operates through a network of churches and volunteers in five major county towns: Sea forth, Exeter, Clinton, Wingham and Goderich. It provides a location for people to make donations of money, new toys, new clothing, and canned goods for the Bureau’s clients. After the donations are received, referred families are given a confi dential appointment with the Bureau in their area and are assisted in the selection of one toy, items of clothing and mittens for each child in the family. They are also given canned goods and financial help for Christmas dinner if necessary. Last year 346 families and 742 children benefitted from this ser vice. Mrs. Helen Roorda of Clinton is co-ordinating the Bureau this year and oversees the entire program. She provides consultation for local groups to ensure uniformity of service to families throughout the county. Affordable housing needed survey shows According to a recently complet ed survey undertaken by the Huron County Access to Permanent Hous ing Committee, over 79 per cent of those who responded to the survey said that the shortage of non-profit housing in the County was a problem for them. Sixty-four per cent were interested in such hous ing for themselves and their fami lies. Almost 67 per cent said they felt at a loss as to where to go for housing information and assis tance. Julie Lee, Acting Chair of the Committee, said the results were The Children’s Aid Society gives acknowledgement of donations and receipts for income tax purposes. Financial contributions may be made at any time to the Children’s Aid Society at 46 Gloucester Terr ace in Goderich, or during the Christmas Magic campaign on the radio, November 29. Toll free not a surprise to the committee. “We had a strong sense that housing was a problem for many people in the County. The survey confirmed that. It’s given us a data base for our hunch and a clear direction for the future.’’ Lee said the committee had commissioned the report and the survey late last year. It was recently completed by researcher Phyllis Giroux. The survey was based on 2500 questionnaires circulated in the County, and included items similar to those used by the Ministry of Housing in their need and demand number for the campaign is 1-800- 265-5198. This year the Bureau will be accepting item donations during the week of December 10 to 14 at these locations: St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 49 Ontario St., Clinton; Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church, Main St., Exeter; North Street United Church, Goderich; studies for housing. The report recommended the creation of af fordable housing, either non-profit or co-operative, in the Goderich area, a preferred location for many who responded. The report also recommended the establishment of a county-wide housing service/ registry which could provide infor mation on housing opportunities in various locations in the County, as well as legal advice, advocacy, research and public education. According to Ms. Lee, the Com mittee is looking to add to its Egmondville United Church; St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Centre St., Wingham. This has, over the course of time, proven itself to be a necessary and appreciated service in the county. It is a rewarding experience to have contributed to ensure a happy and special Christmas to others. committed membership and to begin work in the areas recom mended by the report. “We are beginning discussions not only with housing consultants, and Ministry officials regarding a housing ser- vice/registry, but also with those who have indicated their interest in applying for affordable housing,” she said, “we hope to meet with many interested individuals and groups over the next couple of months, so that we can begin some definite projects by early next spring.” BLAKE Septic Tank Service Fast Efficient24 Hour Service CALL RAY 887-6800 GENERAL J.
