Butterfly collector speaks at Hort. Soc.meeting
The November Horticulture
Society meeting was held at the
Community Centre on Wednesday,
November 14 with a good atten
dance. The president Mrs. Don
Cartwright welcomed all and “O
Canada’’ was sung with Marjorie
McDougall as pianist.
The meeting was turned over to
Anne Vincent and Shirley Archam-
bault who were in charge. Anne
read a reading and had a contest
and the prize went to the guest of
the evening Mr. George Sutton of
Goderich.
Shirley Archambault introduced
Mr. Sutton and the topic was
“Butterflies of the World’’. He
collected butterflies as a hobby. He
said he started when his six year
old son and he would take walks
and then he left it for awhile and
then got really interested in that
hobby. He and his wife travel a lot
to get these butterflies. He is a
collector and also trades with
others. He had a beautiful display
of the different butterflies. He has
one from Ecuador which had come
in on the bananas at Zehrs store.
He stated a silk moth had no
mouth. He stated he used no
preservative to keep these butter
flies in their boxes, sometimes a
little crushed moth ball. He showed
us a brooch that was made in 1888
and was passed down to his wife
and he said other jewellery could
be made also from butterflies. He
has 36 drawers full and has 7,000
mounted.

He stated he could not send live
material to others. The Monarch
butterfly is the only one that goes
South, the rest hibernate or die. He
uses a dark room to store the boxes
of butterflies. He said there is also
value in this hobby. This was a very
interesting talk, the display was
marvellous and he was quite
humorous. He answered many
questions. Anne Vincent thanked
him and presented him with a gift.
The secretary read the minutes
of the last meeting and the treasur

statement. The Nativity Scene that
was beautifully painted by Joyce
Bean was on display and will be
