Budget forecasts, including the county’s $1.5 million commitment to the Huronview project, show the county facing a 19 per cent levy increase in 1991, an increase that had Exeter Reeve Bill Mickle worried. He wondered if the county council should be putting limits on how much the increase had to be whittled down. “We have to be cognizant of the economic situation of the county. Council has to sit down and say ‘how much can we extract from property owners?’ He pointed to plant closures and layoffs and the situation with farms and businesses, saying “We can’t be talking about increases in the teens. I really believe there is some real soul-searching to be done. We’re almost to the limit.’’ But Warden Lionel Wilder said it was going to be a real challenge just to trim the increase at all. If the increase was limited to the five to seven per cent range he didn’t see how the county could find the money needed for Huronview. The county executive is trying to get out the word to department heads to do tough, county hears the best job they can in trimming costs. “By holding the increase under 10 per cent it’s going to take a long time to raise $1.5 million a year for Huronview,’’ he said.
