Brussels Crusaders lose, tie in weekend hockey action On Friday, Nov. 2 the Crusaders travelled to Arthur for a game against the Tigers. The first period began with Arthur grabbing a 3-0 lead before the period was half over. The Crusaders cut the lead by one goal when David Montgomery and Brian Ten Pas combined to set up Dave Harding for the score. Arthur added one more goal before the period ended to give them a 4-1 lead after the first period of play. The second period began with Arthur adding to the lead just 30 seconds into the period. Brussels cut the lead by one again when Kyle Reading and Dan Hill com­ bined to set up Mark Leslie for a power play goal. However the Tigers once again scored before the end of the period to give them a 6-2 lead after two periods of play. The third period began with Arthur adding two more goals to their lead making it 8-2 at that point. The Crusaders cut the lead by one when Brian Ten Pas set up Dave Montgomery for another power play goal. On Saturday the Crusaders were at home to play the Tavistock Royals. The first period was just over a minute old when Mark Leslie and Paul Robinson combined to set up Jason Goodall for the first goal of the game. Brussels increased their lead when Leslie and Darren Foerter worked together to set up Kyle Reading for the score. The Crusaders added to their lead when Ken Cousins and Dave Stephenson made the play out to Mark Harding for the goal. Tavistock didn’t give in as they came back with two goals in the last five minutes of the period making it a 3-2 hockey game in favour of Brussels. The Crusaders increased their lead to two goals two minutes into the second period when David Montgomery finished off a passing play from Brian Campbell and Jason Goodall. The Royals once again scored to cut the lead to one just five minutes later. The second period ended with the score 4-3 for the Crusaders. The third period started with Brussels increasing their lead to two once again when Brian Ten Pas and Paul Robinson set up Brian Campbell for the fifth Crusader goal. Tavistock cut the lead to one again just two minutes later. The Royals tied the game up with just 15 seconds left in the game to make Blyth Atoms start season on a roll The Blyth Atoms started their 1990-91 hockey season on a winn­ ing note, upsetting the hometown Teeswater club, in an exhibition match. Blyth came out of the gates flying, outskating the Teeswater club the first half. Blyth tallied up four straight goals. Michael Hag­ gitt scored the season opener set up by Steve Bernard and Trent Richmond. Jeff Cowan beat the goalie late in the first period with Amanda Anderson and Michael Courtney doing the corner work to put Blyth up 2-0. Early in the second period this line connected again with Amanda Anderson finding the net, assisted by Jeff Cowan and Michael Court­ ney. Blyth’s fourth goal came at the mid-way mark of the second period with Mark Wilson blasting a shot past the Teeswater goalie with Shane Burkholder picking up an the final score 5-5. The Crusaders added some new players to the team after the folding of the Harriston Blues the players are: Darren Foerter, Dan Hill, Mark Leslie, Kyle Reading assist. Teeswater battled back the se­ cond half of the game, scoring two goals, making the score 4-2 Blyth. Scott Bromley made some key saves in net, with the help from his defence Greg Blok, Ronnie Abel- Rinn, Mark Wilson, Mike Ansley, and Jeff Ferguson to shut down Teeswater late game attack and hold on to Blyth’s 4-2 lead. BLYTH 2 BRUSSELS 1 The Blyth Atoms travelled to Brussels on Nov. 2 and battled out a 2-1 win over a tough Brussels team. Once again Blyth came out flying and scored two first-period goals. Jeff Cowan scored nine seconds into the game, to get Blyth rolling, picking up a pass from Michael Courtney and picking the corner, behind the Brussels goal tender. Late in the first period Trent Richmond scored the winning goal, and Kevin Weppler. The Crusaders next action is on Friday, Nov. 9 when they travel to Milverton for a 9:15 start. Then on Saturday, Nov. 10 they return home to play host to Drayton with game time being 8 p.m. jumping on a Michael Haggitt rebound to put Blyth up 2-0. Brussels battled back with a second period goal to keep this game very close. Shane Burkholder shut the door, keeping the puck out of the Blyth net, with a good defensive effort from the Blyth team. Final score Blyth 2, Brussels 1. BLYTH 7 - ELMA LOGAN 2 Blyth’s third game of the week was a tough physical match with Elma Logan with Blyth coming out on top in a hard fought hockey game. Jeff Cowan had his best game of this young season scoring five of Blyth’s goals. Greg Blok tallied his first on a bullet from the blueline and Michael Haggitt scored on a pretty passing play from Trent Richmond and Mike Ansley.
