Bd. of Ed. anticipates grant shortfall Menzie’s students Each year selected graduates of Brussels Public School receive the George Menzies Endowment Fund at F. E. Madill’s Commencement ceremonies. This year Mr. Menzies’ grandson Keith Raymond of Lucknow, left, presented the awards to: Dianne Hall, Scott Johnston, Sandra Marks, Jason Breckenridgeand CorrinnaStephenson. Twoother recipientsfinished their education at other secondary schools. They were Tim Dillow and Gus Protopopus. Already faced with the difficulty of finding enough money to go around the Huron County Board of Education (HCBE) received infor mation at its meeting on November 5, stating that a shortfall in transportation grant revenue this year is evident. In a report to the trustees, Director of Education Bob Allan noted that in anticipation of balanc ing expenditures and revenues, the board included a five per cent increase in their 1990 estimates. However, he said that notice had been given saying that the formu las used for the issuing of grant money will be the same as those in 1989-90 except the daily allowance for school buses has increased by four per cent. Also Mr. Allan’s report stated that the fuel price escalator clause in the bus contract has yielded a net 6.1 per cent increase in costs in the first two months of 1990-91. He said the board expects an imme diate increase in fuel of .03 cents per litre which will bring the percentage even higher. These calculations are based on average costs for a 66-passenger vehicle travelling 90 kilometres a day. The Management Committee presented a recommendation to the board to accept the renewal of the insurance policies of Frank Cowan Company with an increase on the environmental liability insurance from $1 million to $2 million with a $4 million aggregate limit for yearly cost of $235. This recommendation was ap proved by the trustees. Chair Joan Van den Broeck declared her intent to again seek the position of Chair at the Decem ber inaugural meeting of HCBE. 7 receive Geo. Menzies endowment For the 20th year since its inception in 1971 the George Menzies Endowment Fund has provided a substantial cash award to six graduates of Brussels Public School who are presently enrolled in post secondary education. To date the fund has provided more than $64,000 to 115 Brussels and area students. On Friday, Keith Raymond of Lucknow, a grandson of the late George Menzies, presented the awards as a part of the Commence ment exercises at F. E. Madill Secondary School. The 1990 recipients were: Corrinna Stephenson, daughter of Fred and Sharon Stephenson of Brussels, attending University of Western Ontario in the Arts Facul ty majoring in Mathematics and Physical Education. Dianne Hall, daughter of Jack and Jane Hall, Brussels, in an Honours Psychology Programme at Wilfred Laurier University. Sandra Marks, daughter of Dave and Alice Marks, RR 4, Brussels, at the University of Waterloo in Urban and Regional Planning. Jason Breckenridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Breckenridge, at tending Fanshawe College and studying Electrical Engineering Technology. Scott Johnston, son of Glen and Mary Lou Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale at Ridgetown College, studying Agricultural Economics. Tim Dillow, son of Jerry and Mafg Dillow, completed his secon dary education in Stratford and is attending University of Waterloo. Georgia Protopapas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Protopapas of Forest attending Lambton College in Sarnia. Both these former Brussels stu dents were also recipients of the Endowment Fund Award. The late George Menzies, form erly of Grey Township and Brus sels, was intensely interested in the value of education throughout his life. The possessor of less formal education than a Grade 8 student of today, he was able to gain for himself a position of prominence and respect in his community, and was always vitally concerned that any student who had the ability to proceed to higher education should not be held back through the lack of financial assistance. With this in mind, his will generously provided for the establishment of the fund, which will continue to benefit students from the area for many years to come.
