Brenda McIntosh elected president of Federation Tuckersmith Township Farmer Brenda McIntosh was named presi dent of the Huron County Federa tion of Agriculture at the annual meeting of the Federation in Brus sels Friday night. The former first vice-president of the Federation was unopposed for the position. Jokingly referring to two past-presidents of the Federa tion, (Paul Klopp who became Huron M.P.P. and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agri culture and Tony McQuail who has been named Executive Assistant to Minister of Agriculture Elmer Buchanan), she promised not to use the office of president as a HFA gives NDP a shopping list Nine per cent long term interest for farmers heads up the shopping list given to Paul Klopp and the new NDP government by the Huron County Federation of Agri culture. Outgoing president Chris Palmer of East Wawanosh said the Federa tion wants the nine per cent rate for long-term farm borrowing and interest rate relief for short term loans. The Federation also wants to see a 75 per cent farm property tax rebate legislated by the new government. He also said the NDP should help the environment by promoting the use of ethanol in gasoline, a move that would pro vide markets for farm crops like corn to be used in production of the alcohol. Land stewardship should con tinue to be promoted by the government and, Mr. Palmer said, the government should push for one strong general farm organiza tion. US elections complicate GATT process Continued from page 28 elimination of export subsidies. All countries were supposed to file lists of all their subsidy programs by Oct. 1 then file lists of subsidies they could offer to reduce on Oct. 15. Canada filed a thick document on time for the first deadline but countries like Japan and the U.S. still haven’t filed their first list. Part of the problem in the U.S. is the Nov. 10 Congressional elections. The U.S. doesn’t know if its proposals will have support in Congress until it sees the makeup of the new Congress. Once the lists are posted, nego tiations beyond the agricultural group, the period she called most dangerous, begins. It is scheduled to conclude by late November but the group has booked hotel rooms for an additional three weeks. If an agreement is reached it must still be ratified by the legislatures of the various countries and ratification in the U.S. could be most interesting. Just as the Free Trade Agreement, the GATT agreement will be “fast-tracked” through Congress meaning a dead line for approval next spring. Given the situation, she said, some people hope the GATT talks may fail but “the status quo is not a viable option” given the four years of negotiations that have taken place. “You will see trade wars like you’ve never seen before,” she said. Canada will get “GATT- challenged to death”. There will be bilateral trade deals signed be tween countries as competing trad ing blocs grow. “Nobody knows what could happen but the threats are there.” she said. stepping stone into politics. She has served in the past on the public relations committee and executive of the organization. She singled out Beverley Brown of Brussels, and formerly of Turnberry township, for encouraging her to become more involved in the Federation.
