THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1990. PAGE 23. B-W Trailblazers prepare for winter fun ahead With the prospect of cold tem peratures and snowstorms, many people are dreading the advent of winter. But, not everyone wants to spend the months ahead curled up in front of the fireplace. The Brussels-Walton Trailbla zers have begun gearing up for another season of snowmobiling. This is the third year the club has been in progress and the expansion rate, according to club president Don Blake, has been phenomenal due to the many active members who provide the backbone of the club. This year the club has a brand new executive, in addition to four directors, who regularly attend the Bruce Regional meetings. One of the club members, Mark Gropp, of Brussels, is President of the Bruce Regional Snowmobile Association. Trail co-ordinators are respon sible for the building and mainten ance of the area trails. In addition to gaining permission from land owners Rob McIntosh has been co-ordinating the area north of Brussels to Highway 86, while Wayne Todd overseas the trails in Brussels and Bruce Clark takes over from there to Walton. Other trails run to Seaforth in the south, Mitchell in the east and Blyth in the west where they merge with other clubs. Any landowners who need a change made should contact the co-ordinator in the area, said Mr. Blake. Over 150 members belonged last year and the club operated on a budget of $18,000. Mr. Blake says, increased membership enhances trails as members provide time and funds. To date the club has worked on several projects including a new clubhouse east of Brussels. The club has also undergone incorpora tion to strengthen the operation. Future plans for the Trailblazers could include local loop trails, which would serve the areas not accessible by the 110 kilometres of corridor trail. The club is also planning to participate in the Timmy Run and continue its driver training program for children 12 and over. Mr. Blake says that the club is looking into upgrading the equip ment and hopes to set up A-frame shelters at stop areas. “We would like to promote ourselves as a service group with charitable intentions,’’ Mr. Blake said. “Last year Ontario’s snow- mobilers raised over a half a million dollars for the Easter Seal cam paign during the annual Snowa- rama.” The cost of trail permits has increased this year by $5 up to $50 for early buyers. “After December 15. the permits will cost $60,’’ Mr. Blake said. The permits are valid for any trail in the province. “Snowmobiling is a sport built on the efforts of an army of volunteers,” said Mr. Blake. “Last year over 51,000 snowmobilers bought trail permits in Ontario supporting the self-regulated user pay system. With this kind of support I feel we have the right Q. The main feed a beef animal consumes is: Hay or silage; grain; soybeans or barley? A. The Overloads defeated the Wingham Goodtimers 6 to 4 in their home opener before a two game road trip. The Overloads downed Hensall 14 to 2 and then recorded a come-from-behind vic tory over the Clinton Foul-Ups. The score was 8 to 6. The Foul-Ups came out flying and scored three early goals. Harry Wilson was solid in the Blyth net and after several good saves, the tide began to turn in the Overloads’ favour. Barney Stewart’s goal with just over a minute to play in the third period proved to be the winner. Blyth goals were scored by Barney Stewart, 2; Gary Courtney, 2; Wayne McDougall, 1; Bryan Black, 1; Tony Van Bakkel, 1 and machines that are low in noise and exhaust emissions. And I think our sport will continue to see changes over the next few years.” Murray Black, 1.
