East Wawanosh school news Special memory JulieSnow of Belgrave shows her dad Peter the Mickey Mouse ears she got while visiting Disney World. Julie was one of 80 children who saw the famous amusement park through the courtesy of the Sunshine Foundation of Canada. Julie’s younger brother Matthew was presented with the Mouse ears as a souvenir upon her return. Belgrave girl enjoys Disney World trip BY BONNIE GROPP Since 1987 the Sunshine Founda tion of Canada has operated eight dreamlifts for children who are seriously or terminally ill or severe ly physically disabled. This year Julie Snow, daughter of Peter and Karen of Belgrave was one of 80 children selected to fly to Disney World in Orlando, Florida for an exciting six hours of fun. Julie is a bubbly, energetic girl, a typical nine-year-old, except for one thing. Since birth she has had six operations, including three major ones to correct bone and facial defections. Julie was bom with Crouzon, a type of Craniosynostosis syndrome, in which the bones of the skull fuse rather than join together loosely. When she was only a few months old she underwent the first in what has been a series of surgeries. At just two-and-a-half an operation was done to move her eyes closer together. And there is more to come. By her early teens she will once again undergo surgery to correct the upper jaw, which her parents hope will be the last major one. Julie was nominated for the trip by her doctor, R. G. Colcleugh of Children’s Hospital in London and was notified that she had been chosen early in September. Edith Forsythe of St. Thomas was ap pointed as Julie’s “buddy” and she called to introduce herself prior to the trip. Julie plans to write her this weekend to say thank you. The trip started on September 27 at about 7:15 a.m. when Julie and the rest of the Sunshine Foundation entourage boarded a plane bound for Florida. They arrived, Julie said, to a perfect day, warm and no rain, and they only had to wait in line for one ride. Though the six hours went quickly, Julie was able to see plenty of things and enjoy several of the rides. “On the Snow White ride, the girl sitting behind me got really frightened when the I El ONTARIO K JR MARCH £ 2 OF DIMES witch came up. I don’t know what the witch said because I couldn’t hear. There were too many people screaming,” she said. After touring the Magical King dom and meeting the Disney characters, accompanied by mem bers of the United States Navy, the group assembled at about 6 p.m. to begin the trip home. They arrived back in London shortly after 10 that night. The only down side of the trip for Julie was that she got ill during the bus trip back to the airport, but she put it down to all the excitement. Upon her return, the Grade four East Wawanosh student presented her seven-year-old brother Mat thew with a set of Mickey Mouse ears, which assauged his dis appointment a little bit at not being able to go. The entire cost of the trip is about $00,000 and is covered by the Sunshine Foundation. The program is offered to special children be tween the ages of three and 19. tl>e Blyth >W 523-9381 WEEKEND SPECIALS EAT IN OR TAKE OUT CHICKEN N CHIPS DINNER FRIDAYS SATURDAY 5:00 P.M.-8:00P.M.
