Brussels Bulls show explosive offence in 2 road wins The Brussels Bulls opened their 1990-91 season Friday night as they played last year’s All-Ontario Champions, Orangeville Crushers. The game started very fast with very few whistles. Orangeville scored at 3:50 and 7:36 to take a 2-0 lead. The Bulls scored their first goal of the year off the stick of Paul Brophy from Marty Rutledge at 7:49. But Orangeville scored their third goal at 10:38. The Bulls scored the first of four power play goals in a row as Ron Strome scored with assist going to Jeo Walker at 15:56. Then it was Brett Long scoring at 18:49 from Marty Rutledge and Jeff McKee. At the Sports Crusaders face new teams in championship defence The W.O.A.A. Senior Hockey League opens its 1990-91 season this weekend with 17 teams vying for the Grand Championship tro phy. Eight clubs return in the North Divison including Teeswater, Luck now, Ripley, Kincardine, Durham, Dundalk, Wiarton and Lions Head while the South debuts with nine teams: Arthur, Drayton, Grand Valley, Milverton, Tavistock, Wel lesley, the return of the Monkton Wildcats, a new entry from Palmer ston and the defending WO A A Champions from Brussels. While the WOAA still suffers an image problem of playing in the shadows of inferiority of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) it should be noted that with the quality of play rapidly increasing and the calibre of officiating on par the WOAA clubs unanimously end of the first period the score was tied at three. The second period was similar to the first - fast skating and hard hitting. The Bulls got the lead on their third power play goal as Marty Rutledge scored with assists going to Corey and Jeff McKee. Orangeville tied the score at 4:43. At 6:47 Bevin Flett bulged the twine on a pass from Paul Brophy. But Orangeville would not lie down as they scored at 10:38 and 14:17 to regain the lead. But Paul Brophy scored on a pass from Marty Rutledge and Ron Strome, so the second period ends tied at six. rejected an invitation to rejoin the OHA as a new Senior “C” league for the 1990-91 season. The new league was proposed by the OHA because the WOAA now boasts more senior hockey teams than the OHA, including eight former members so perhaps it is they who suffer the problem not the WOAA. The Brussels Crusaders open their home schedule on Sat., Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. against Drayton in a rematch of last season’s Grand Championship final. So make Saturday night in Brussels, “Senior Hockey Night”. The hockey is fast skating, hard hitting and competitive, but the greatest selling point of all is that the entertainment is supplied by local entertainers: the people who you meet while walking down the street each day! The third period was all Bulls as Jeff McKee scored from Corey McKee and Brett Long at 5:23. Bulls scored their fifth power play as Marty Rutledge scores from Steve Vandendool and Jamie Gibb- ings at 7:30. Orangeville scored their final goal of the game at 8:22. The coaching staff was very pleased with the Bulls only taking 14 minutes in penalties and scoring five of six power play chances along with a short-handed goal.
