Brussels Council briefs _______ _ ________________________________• < ■' _ By-law passes making Donna White new Clerk-Treas. Brussels Village Council passed a bylaw at Monday night’s meeting officially making Donna White the new clerk-treasurer of the village, succeeding Hugh Hanly who leaves for a position with the town of Dunnville Oct. 12. The bylaw sets out Mrs. White’s pay at $27,000 for one year, increasing to $30,000 after the first anniversary. Meanwhile council set Oct. 15 as the date to hire a temporary assistant to Mrs. White. Council will choose from a list of more than 30 applicants. ***** Also at the Oct. 15 meeting a public meeting will be held on a zoning change for Frank Backhaus which would allow him to build a three car garage with apartment above. The meeting will be at 7 where the former Olympia Restaur ant was located on main street. Under the zoning bylaw only 35 per cent of the land area can be covered by a new building in the core even though current buildings cover close to 100 per cent of the lot. Council indicated it would likely be supportive of the developer to increase the coverage to that of neighbouring buildings. ***** Building permits were approved for Bob Hopper for a portable deck, porch and ramp in the trailer park and to McFour Holdings for a new house. ***** Reporting from the Brussels, Morris and Grey recreation com mittee Councillor Mary Stretton said the committee had been p.m. ***** Council learned it may be asked for a minor variance to allow a building of two stores and four aoartments on the vacant lots approached by the Brussels Opti mist Club with an offer to help develop the land behind the arena recently purchased by the three municipalities for recreation and fairground use. The committee will also pay $3,500 in material costs for glass and plywood to protect players from fans (or vice versa) at the entrance to the dressing rooms at the BMG arena.***** In another sign of winter, council will invite tenders from three local firms for snowplow operation in the village from Nov. 15 to March 31.***** The village will not take advant age of an Ontario Hydro incentive plan to convert its street lights to a new energy-saving lights. Hydro estimated the cost of replacing the 169 lights in the village could be $32,247. It offers a 25 per cent cash grant or an interest free loan over four years. It estimates a saving of 40 per cent on energy costs from the new lights which works out, Clerk-treasurer Hugh Hanly said, to more than $3,000 a year. Councillor Dave Hastings said the village can’t afford to do the entire town at once. He could see the need to take on redoing lighting 4H Club meets On Monday, September 17 mem bers of the Brussels 4H Club held their first meeting on “Our Heri tage.
