HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1990-09-12, Page 17Bulls beat Jr. B Cyclones Two hundred watched the Brus­ sels Bulls first pre-season game as the Jr. C hockey team faced off against the Listowel Cyclones of the Mid-west Jr B League. Brussels started Scott Thiede in goal for the first period which saw Listowel scoring first a power-play goal at 18:50. The Bulls tied the score on a power play goal by Jamie Gibbings with assists going to Corey McKee and Justin Murray at 5:04. The first period ended knotted at one. Returning goalie Jeff Roy started the second period. The Bulls took the lead at 17:35 as the combination of Rutledge, McKee and McKee scored. The Cyclones tied the score at 13:35 with another power-play goal. Jeff McKee scored a short-hand­ ed goal at 11:25 with Marty Rutledge drawing the assist. Marty Rutledge scored his second goal from Corey McKee and brother 17-year-old Greg McNevan of Har­ riston. This weekend Brussels vs. Goderich in Listowel Friday night at 7 p.m. They practice in Wing­ ham Saturday at 5 p.m. and travel to Goderich for a Sunday night game at 7 p.m. u Top Tykes The Auburn Tykes Ball Team had a successful 1990 season with each player improving on their batting and fielding skills. (Absent was Jennifer and Jodee Godrey). Walton PeeWee girls win crown As ball season comes to a close, Walton Pee Wee Girls celebrate their victory. The B Tri-County Playoffs were held Aug. 27-30 with Walton clenching the trophy from Wingham. After an 18 game season, the team won 12 games and lost six putting them in the Tri-County B division. Advancing from a playoff win against Winthrop, they managed to put out Seaforth. Coming up against Wingham for the B Cham­ pionship, they lost the first of a three game series 20 - 12 - a major defeat. They struggled with the second game to come up with a 13-12 victory. The final game held in Walton was a well matched game with Walton commanding a small lead in the game. By the bottom of the fifth inning the score was 13-7 for Walton and a B Championship. Coached by Murray and Sharon Blake of Walton the girls played well all year. A victory sleep-over was held at Blake’s to celebrate the win. Jeff at 6:58. The Bulls closed out the scoring at .22 as Jeff McKee scored from Corey McKee and Marty Rutledge. The Brussels Juniors skated to the dressing room with a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes. Chris Fryfoggle played the third period in goal, a period that saw Listowel come out flying. They scored at 17:33 to draw within two goals. They scored their third power-play goal of the game at 13:27. Listowel tied the score at 8:03 of the third and it looked like they had flipped the momentum in their favour. However, the score remained tied until the 22 second mark as the Bulls scored their second short-handed goal of the game as Marty Rutledge completed the hat-trick with assists going to defenceman Joe Walker and rookie Jeff McKee. The Bulls took 24 minutes in penalties and Listowel received 20 minutes in penalties. The Brussels Blyth Kinderball team recently wrapped up its season. Members of the team are (front row, left to right) Bradley Schmidt, Brandon Brown, Erin Sanders, Christopher Sanders, Duncan Hamm, Devin Shannon; ^oack) Charlene Bromley, Ashley Taylor, Amanda Fidom, Justin Rinn, Shawn Henry, Cole Stewart, stevie Govier, and Kirk Stewart. The team coacn is Anita Bromley. Kinder Crew Hydro buys and sells Ontario Hydro purchased 953.300 megawatt-hours of elec­ tricity during July 1990 at a cost of $37 million. During the same period, revenues from the sale of 47.300 megawatt-hours of electri­ city to other utilities were approxi­ mately $1.1 million. Bulls dressed 18 skaters and three goalies. The Juniors had four vets sitting this game out, as they wanted a good look at some of their rookies. As of Sunday, Bulls have 12 players signed. In goal veteran Jeff Roy signed for his second year as a Bull. On defence Brussels has signed four veterans. All back for a second season: Bevin Flett, Craig King, Joe Walker and Jamie Gibbings. This year Jr. C. hockey are able to sign two 21-year-old players who played with their club the previous year. The Bulls signed high-scoring forward Marty Rut­ ledge and last year’s Bulls Captain Ron Strome. Brussels native Steve Fritz is back for his second season as a Bull. As well as Steve Vandendool from Clinton. The Bulls have also signed a rugged left winger Brett Martin of Wingham along with high-scoring forward Paul Brophy. This player from the Blyth team takes a mighty swing during this close semi-final game against Nile at the Auburn Slo-Pitch Tournament last weekend. Nile won the “A” Championship, overpowering the Gardners from Goderich 18 to 3. The “B” title was won by the Parkhouse Raiders from Goderich who defeated the Champion Local 1863 team 12 to 5.
