planned for Blyth
The Brussels Optimists Club is
sponsoring a new club in Blyth.
There are currently in the area
seven Optimist Clubs comprised of
over 200 members. In addition to
Brussels there are Optimists in
Wingham, Clinton, Bayfield,
Goderich, Seaforth and Exeter.
These groups are part of the
Mid-Western Ontario District, one
of the fastest growing districts of
Optimist International. There are
presently 99 clubs and 46,000
members.
Optimist Clubs are made up of
men and women who are interested
in serving their community. With
their motto, “A Friend to Youth”,
they have committeed themselves
to establishing programs to edu
cate youth about drug abuse, law
enforcement and other issues that
shape young lives. In this way
Optimist club members have been
making a positive impact on the
lives of today youth.
The 160,000 Optimists across
North America serve 3.5 million
young people each year working
directly with them in a hands-on
approach, through sports pro
grams, Bike Safety Week, Appre
ciation Week, oratorical and essay
contests, and many other programs
to benefit the youths of the
community.
A testimony to their work can be
witnessed at the ball parks, soccer
fields, recreation centres and play
grounds.

People
We are always pleased to report
achievements of former Blyth
public school students.
The most recent accomplish

son of Grant and Pat Sparling, who
has just entered his third year at
Western University, London.
In April of this year, David
received a Westminster College
Citizenship Award for contribu

the two years he lived there.
Westminster College is a residence

Here, too, on Sept. 4 at a formal
banquet, David was the recipient of
the Beaver Foods Bursary of $500
for his involvement in residence,

Congratulations, David, from your
many Blyth friends.
Cool summer
reduces
electrical
demand
Apart from a few hot days, this
year saw the coolest July experi
enced by Ontarians since the
mid-1980s. As a result, Ontario
Hydro experienced a reduction in
electricity demand. During July
1990, Hydro supplied 10.9 million
megawatt-hours of electricity to its
customers, compared to 11.2 mil
lion megawatt-hours supplied dur
ing the same period in 1989. Still,
the few hot days that were experi
enced brought a new summer peak
of 20,460 megawatts on July 4. The
July 1989 peak was 20,086 mega
watts.
