Becky McLaughlin’s second homer of the game provided the winning margin for Brussels in the final. Also knocking round-trippers were Lisa Coyne, Heather Douma, Lesley Elliott, Jenny Gowing and Kara Pepper. Brussels had won a first “round bye in the tournament thanks to finishing in first place with a perfect record during the regular Belgrave Mites win 2 but lose big one Belgrave Mite Boys won two games last week, including the first game of their year-end playoff tournament before losing badly to Gowanstown. Thursday night the team defeat­ ed Brussels 14-10 in Belgrave. Brussels scored two runs in the top of the first but Belgrave took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs. Justin Campbell, Ryan Fear, Jeremy Campbell, Jason Howatt and Jamie McCallum all crossed the plate for Belgrave. The home team blanked the visitors in the top of the second and Justin Campbell and Tom Pfeiffer scored for Belgrave to - make the score 7-2 after two innings. Brussels nibbled away at the lead in the third, scoring three while only Jamie McCallum scored for Belgrave. Brussels scored two in the fourth and Justin Howatt scored for Belgrave. Brussels scored three in the fifth but any doubt about the outcome was erased when Belgrave scored five runs in the bottom of the inning, led by home runs by Jeremy Campbell and Ryan Cook. Also scoring were Ryan Fear, Jamie McCallum and Robbie Mc­ Gee. In the tournament held in Wing­ ham Saturday, Belgrave started off with a 14-9 win over Wingham. The teams each scored three runs in the first inning. Jeremy Campbell led the Belgrave attack with a home run. Also scoring were Justin Campbell and Ryan Cook. Belgrave scored four in the eeond and three in the third to take a big lead. Tom Pfeiffer, Jamie McCallum, Craig Marks and Michael Marks scored in the se­ cond. Robbie McGee’s homerun capped the third when Jeremy Campbell and Jason McBurney also scored. Wingham got two runs back in the fourth after Brussels failed to score then scored two more in the fifth after only Ryan Cook could score for Belgrave. Belgrave scored three more in the top of the sixth as Justin Howatt, Tom Pfeiffer and Jason McCallum all crossed the plate. Wingham scored twice in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 14-9. And then the wheels fell off. After having defeated Gowanstown schedule. The team kept the record intact by defeating Gowanstown 20-15 in their first game. Jenny Gowing and Sherri Therrian had two homeruns each and Amber Ruttan and Becky McLaughlin each had single homers. In the consolation championship of the “A” series, Listowel defeat­ ed Wingham 19-14. In the “B” division, Wingham won the championship with a 15-10 win over Atwood. In the consola­ tion championship for the “B” series Winthrop defeated Belgrave 22-12. 20-5 in the regular season, Bel­ grave got a shock when they were blasted 24-2 in their second game of the tournament. Gowanstown scored four in the first, three in the second and two in the third to take a 9-0 lead before Belgrave scored a lone run by Justin Campbell in the bottom of the third. Gowanstown scored five more in the fourth and three in the fifth before Belgrave got its second run. Robbie McGee scored Belgrave’s final run of the game. On the ball Kara Pepper strikes a hit for the Brussels Mite Girls against Gowanstown in the championship tournament held in Brussels Saturday. Brussels girls completed an undefeated season to win the championship with Kara hitting one of the home runs that powered the team to the final game win over Bluevale. Steve Fritz captains Canadian champs A Brussels area youth was part of the winning team at the National Midget Boys Softball Champion­ ships in Milverton this past week­ end. Steve Fritz, son of Jim and Barb of RR 2, Brussels, along with the rest of the Milverton Midgets won the championship title on Sunday evening, the culmination of a week-long event. Fritz, 18, was invited to try-out at the beginning of the season after Milverton coach Marty Scott had seen him play. He made the team and filled the positions of catcher and third base man. CLASSIFIED - FAST - DEPENDABLE - HIGHLY VISIBLE Teams from every province but Quebec participated in the tourna­ ment. Milverton was the second Ontario team in the competition as they were the host team. There were five teams in each division and the worst record in each was eliminated after the round robin. Then each team had to lose two games to get eliminated. On .the final day of the tourna­ ment, Sunday, Milverton faced off against Saskatchewan and defeated them 3-0. The next game was against Chinguacousy, who they had knocked down on Saturday morning. At this point Milverton had been undefeated, but the opposing team came back and beat them 8-4. Both teams now had one loss each so had to play a back-to-back game to decide the championship. In the extra inning Jamie Scott drove home the winning run for Milverton and they defeated the Chinguacousy team 4-3. Fritz, was catcher for all three final games and as captain accept­ ed the trophy at the end for his team. Each member also received a Spalding bat and gold medals.
