UCW honours octogenarians
An eye-catching arrangement of
burgundy-coloured cactus dahlias,
pastel-toned snapdragons and
baby’s breath at the entrance to the
Knox United Church school room
gave a silent welcome to the 21
invited guests and their friends as
they arrived at the annual octo
genarian birthday party, Monday,
August 13.
Mrs. Sarah Anderson, President
of the Afternoon U.C.W. unit
greeted all persons on arrival. Each
80-year-old guest was then ushered
to one of seven small tables which
was attractive with its white lunch
cloth centred with a bud vase of
sweet peas and greenery. The
dining table, with a lace covering,
held a bowl of full-bloom roses
flanked by lighted pink tapers and
two decorated, candle-bedecked
angel cakes. These cakes were cut
later by two of the guests: Mrs.
Olive Campbell and Mrs. Alice
Procter, who also blew out the
ica.
Mrs. Louise Bosman, President
of the Knox U.C.W. extended
words of welcome, wit and humour.
Mrs. Adair contributed two vocal
numbers with banjo and piano
accompaniment.
Mrs. Hunter then led the group
in the singing of old favourite and
sacred songs, before giving a
reading enttiled, “The Satellite
Dish”.
The singing of “Happy Birth
day” preceded the serving of cake.

An entertaining program was
pre-arranged by M.C., Mrs.
Dorothy Coultes and assistant,
Mrs. Mary Hunter.
The opening poem “Being
Neighbourly’’ was read by
Dorothy. Mrs. Edith Vincent was in
charge of the worship service with
the theme “Troubles”. The hymns
“Jesus, Stand Among Us”, “Take
Time To Be Holy”, and a scripture
reading from Matt. 6 added to the
sentiments. She stated some per
sons bear all yesterday’s troubles,
all today’s and all that ever will be.
Rey. Peter Tucker, minister of
the charge spoke briefly on
people’s inner feelings. He said
“Age is a state of the mind”, so
control that inward state. Remem
ber the good; forget the bad. We
are one people in God’s care.

McBurney, violinist; Mrs. Norman
Coultes, pianist; Alex Robertson
and Jack Adair, banjo accompan

Season ends
Belgrave Mite boys ended their
season with a year-end tournament
in Wingham.
The boys played their first game
against Wingham defeating them
14-10. They went on to play
Gowanstown and were defeated
24-2.
After the tournament, the team
players and parents along with
other members of the family, had a
barbecue at the Belgrave pavilion.
After supper, sports and various
games were played following up
with a ball game against the
parents.
Linda and John Campbell (coach)
were presented with a lovely
picture on behalf of the team.
That evening the boys camped
out at Jeremy and Justin Camp
bell’s and ended up on Sunday
swimming at Vanastra. Taking part
were Justin and Jeremy Campbell,
Jason Howatt, Tom Pfeiffer, Ryan
Fear, Jamie McCallum, Craig
Marks, Michael Marks. Missing
was Marc Alexander.
Correction
A mistake was made in last
week’s story of the Belgrave Kins
men’s proposed complex. The story
said that East Wawanosh had
agreed to give $41,000 to the
project if Morris Township would
match it. It should have stated that
$41,000 was the total asked from
the combined municipalities with
Morris and East Wawanosh each
being asked for $20,000.
Also, there had been no request
for money made to the Belgrave
Women’s Institute contrary to the
article.
We apologize for any inconveni
ence this may have caused.
