Kitchener Caseys win tournee Kitchener Caseys edged Cam­ bridge Rafters 2-1 to win the championship of the Brussels Invi­ tational Softball tournament Mon­ day night. 13-2. In a closely fought game Brussels won 4-1. Midgets sweep series Brussels Midgets swept their best of three WOAA playoff series with Cargill last week and will now advance to the WOAA semi-finals against Williamsford. Thursday night Brussels hosted Cargill in the first game of the series played in Walton. Brussels trailed 1-0 after one inning but exploded for four runs in the second and never looked back after that, rolling to a 12-9 win. Brussels added one run in the third and two in the fourth to build up a 7-2 lead going into the fifth. Cargill closed the gap scoring three in the fifth but home runs by Dan Beuermann and Greg Mulvey in the sixth helped Brussels to anoth­ er three runs. Cargill scored three in the seventh but Brussels got two in the bottom of the inning. Cargill got one run back in the eighth but Andrew McCutcheon shut down Cargill in the ninth to secure the win. Pitching all nine innings McCutcheon recorded 12 strike­ outs. On Sunday the team wound up the series in Cargill winning a tight 8-7 game despite a Cargill run in the ninth inning. Brussels scored once in the first and twice in the second while Scott Johnston shut down Cargill and Brussels looked to be on the way. Despite rain the four-day tour­ nament ended on time Monday. In the Consolation Championship Belmore blasted Cambridge Braves But in the third, Brussels scored a run but saw Cargill roar back with five runs. Johnston, however, blanked Cargill to the end of the sixth inning while Brussels scored one in the fifth to tie the game. Cargill took the lead again with a Brussels Mites defeat Fordwich team 19-14 Belgrave Mites travelled to Ford- wich Thursday, August 2 and came home with a win in Mite Boys North Division play. Jeremy Campbell and Jamie McCallum shared the pitching as Belgrave took a 19-14 win. Ford- wich started off hot with a big first inning. After Ryan Cook and Jason Howatt had scored for Belgrave in the top of the inning, Fordwich scored six times in the bottom of the inning. But Belgrave bounced right back, outscoring Fordwich 5-1 in the second inning. Jason Howatt, Justin Campbell, Craig Marks, Ryan Fear and Tom Pfieffer scored for Belgrave. Jamie McCallum belted a home run in the third inning to lead Belgrave to a four-run inning while they held Fordwich scoreless. Also Kitchener Caseys had made their way to the final by defeating Cambridge Braves in the first round 10-2 under the mercy rule then edged Brussels Tigers 7-3 in the quarter final. In the semi-final Caseys defeated Shakespeare. Cambridge Rafters had defeated Belmore 11-10 in the opening round and Belmore Juniors 2-0 in the second. Cambridge edged Camlache 6-4 in the semi-final. On the Consolation side, after losing their first game to the Rafters, Belmore Stingers went on to defeat Mitchell Gladiators 11-5 under the mei*cy rule then edged Walton Brewers 3-1. Cambridge after losing to the Caseys in the first round, defeated Fullarton 4-3 and Ingersoll 6-5. Brussels Tigers, the host team started out well defeating Fullarton A’s but lost to the Caseys 7-3 in the second round. Brussels Juniors lost 22-21 to Camlache Juniors in the first round, then 7-6 to Walton Brewers in the second. The Brewers lost 4-3 to Sebringville Royals in the first round and, after defeating Brussels Juniors, dropped the Consolation semi-final to Belmore 3-1. Blyth Soundproof got mercied 9-1 by Mitchell Mets in the first round then edged by Ingersoll Juniors 7-6 in the next round. Lawnbowlers hold pairs tournament On Thursday, August 2 the Brussels Lawn Bowling Club held their Ladies Pairs Tournament. It was a lovely summer day and bowling commenced at 10:30. The teams had a pot luck lunch at noon. Coming first was Margaret Robin­ son and her partner from Mitchell with three wins and 47. Loraine Elliott of Mitchell was second with three wins and 46. The remaining were two game winners: Carol Carter, Seaforth; Ilean Adamson, Seaforth; Lois Haines, Clinton; Lillian -Horne, Atwood; Audrey McDonald, Lucknow; Margerey Solomon, Lucknow; Ada Pethick, Mitchell; Elda Coultes, Wingham. The Consolation went to Isabell Annis, Mitchell. run in the seventh but Brussels scored three in the eighth to take the lead. Cargill scored its run in the ninth but Andrew McCutcheon, who had come on in the seventh, prevented any further scoring to give Brussels the win. McCutcheon had five strike outs and Johnston 6. scoring for Belgrave were Craig Marks, Michael Marks and Tom Pfieffer. Peter Irwin and Craig Marks scored for Belgrave in the fourth while Fordwich was blanked again. The bats were booming for both teams in the fifth with Belgrave scoring six times and Fordwich seven. Ryan Cook, Justin Camp­ bell, Jeremy Campbell, Justin Howatt, Michael Marks and Pfief­ fer all scored for Belgrave. Thursday night the team will be at home to meet Belmore at 7 p.m. GET CASH!
