The M.P. for Nickle Belt urged New Democrats to be missionaries, taking the word about NDP philosophy to the people. M.P. says marketplace philosophy tearing country apart The marketplace philosophy of the Liberal and Progressive Con servative parties is sowing dissen tion among Canadians, John Rod- riguez, M.P. for Nickel Belt told the nomination meeting 'of the Huron New Democratic Party in Clinton Wednesday night. The NDP critic for Consumer and Corporate Affairs said he had never experienced a climate like the one in the country at the moment. The system is pitting people against people: consumers against farm ers; workers against workers; the government against natives. The Liberals and Conservatives believe the marketplace will fight it out and those who can’t survive will get a means test to get government assistance. It is “the philosophy of the individual triumphant,’’ he said. “The fittest survive. You look after yourself. I don’t have to look after you.’’ By contrast, he said, the NDP philosophy is that people are their LIBERAL NOMINATION CONVENTION Thursday, August 9, 1990 at 8:00 p.m. at the Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton brother’s and sister’s keepers and policies are tailored to help each other. Mr. Rodriguez compared Prem ier David Peterson and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, saying each has been helping his rich friends. Each had broken election promises, he said. Mr. Peterson has promised an insurance pro gram that would cost less but instead gave Ontario a program that will cost more and “a nice gift to the insurance companies of $100 million.’’ Mr. Mulroney had brought in 31 tax increases, he said and Mr. Peterson 28. From 1984 to 1988 Mr. Mulroney lost eight cabinet mini sters in scandals he said and Mr. Peterson has lost seven in the last three years. “Everytime you give a Tory or a Liberal a majority government’’ he said, it doesn’t result in good government, honesty or promises kept. “These people seem to think that because you voted them in they can do anything they want and don’t have to consult people. The only time they’re constantly consul ting the grassroots is when there’s a minority government.’’ He claim ed the only time the Peterson government has been responsive was during its two-year pact with the NDP when it held a minority after the 1985 election. He told the Huron New Demo crats they must be missionaries. The NDP philosophy is needed today when there are so many selfish attitudes, he said, when there are more food banks in Toronto than McDonald’s outlets.
