Father, son to compete in national racing event
of three events in top spot after 15
of 26 events at the Ontario High
Point Championship. This year,
thus far, he is, he said, leading the
riders over 30.
Brett entered the competitive
track in late 1988, but has been
riding casually for four or five
years. Already, he has an impres
sive list of standings, in the short
time he has been involved. On July
29, Brett placed fourth in the
Provincial Championships at Moto
Park, which moved him into a third
place standing overall in Ontario
for boys under 16. With races to
attend virtually almost every week
end throughout the spring and
summer, Brett has, Chris said
generally finished in the top five
consistently.
For Chris, the Championships
this weekend will hold an even
greater significance than for many.
As he only returned to compete two
years ago this will be the first
National event of this calibre, that
he has had anything to do with in
10 years.
According to Chris, there will be
about 400-500 riders participating,
probably some from as far away as
Michigan and New York. The
reason for Americans competing in
a Canadian National event, Chris
says, is that as a rule, Ontario is
one of the most competitive areas.
There’s a lot of amateur racing that
goes on, he said, “but little of it
gets any attention.’’ Also, he noted
that the nationals are a good place
for riders to get sponsorships.

Top form
Fifteen-year-old Brett Lee of
Walton is riding highasheshows
off the form and ability that has
helped make him the third place
rider under 16 in the overall
provincial standings for dirt bike
racers.
BY BONNIE GROPP
The excitement and thrill of dirt
bike racing is a bug that bit Chris
Lee of Walton two decades ago and
now the fever is spreading to his
two sons, Brett and Matt. This
weekend he and 15-year-old Brett
will tear up the track at the Moto
Park National Amateur Champion
ships in Williamsford near Dur
ham. The event, according to
Chris, is moved from one side of
Canada to the other every alternate
year to give riders an equal
opportunity to be able to attend.
Born in Guilford, England in
1951, Chris attained Canadian citi
zenship in 1967. He got his first
motorcycle when he was 16, then
developed an interest in dirt bikes
three years later, at the beginning
of a new decade. But, it wasn’t
until after he married his wife Judy
and was 22 years of age, that he
began racing. His achievements
then are notable. In 1977 he took
third place in both the 250cc and
Open classes of the Senior National
Championships. Two years later he
had several top 10 finishes in the
Expert National and Provincial
Championship rounds. That same
year he retired from competition.
During those years as well, Chris
had operated a dirt bike shop for
five years and had helped to
organize the Maitland Dirt Riders
Club. As a member of the executive
for the club, he was responsible for
promoting and laying out an annual
sanctioned MX race that included
provincial championship rounds as
well as expert rider schools.
Then in 1987 with the encourage
ment of his family, Chris returned
to competitive racing in the Over 30
class. Since then more notches
have been added. In 1989 at the
Ministade National Championship,
a super cross race on a closed site,
and the Ontario High Point Cham
pionship he finished in second
place. Chris was first in this year’s
Spring Series and second after five
of eight events in the Summer
Series. At the Art Kotte Memorial
Series, he was again first after two
