Throughout the years, our heroes have always been a little bad. While Scarlett O’Hara, be lieved herself in love with the quiet, staid Ashley Wilkes, every woman in the audience knew the man for her, the one who would put fire and passion into her life was the sardonic, charming scoundrel Rhett Butler. In fiction the nice guy, who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful heroine, never has a chance against the rogue, who always treats the lady, at least at the beginning, as less than a lady. Casanova, the legendary charla tan, was famous for his daring escapades and numerous love af fairs. Another cavalier adventurer Don Juan, was as well known for his female conquests as for his daring acts of bravery. So why are bad men so success ful with women? Is it that we believe, we can tame them, that we can be the one to succeed where don’t finish last others before us have not? It happens often enough, that I suppose it has given some credence to the idea. Love has toppled even the mightiest Samson. Or is there still, despite our emergence, despite our strength, some reason that women feel this is their due. Have some long time notions become so ingrained through time and circumstance that we can’t yet fully believe we don’t' deserve this? On the extreme side of the pattern, we hear daily of women who are victims of spousal assault, who believe they are to blame, that in some way they are responsible for whatever caused this senseless, moronic abuse. Even more horrific is that most will be beaten more than 30 times before they will leave. Fortunately, while this is happening more than we’d like to admit, it is not the norm. For most of us, our experiences have left us, at the least wiser, and at the worst, bitter. Though most of us will encounter a cavalier rogue at some point in our life, one who will treat us shamefully and shamelessly, for the majority it is thankfully valuable learning experience. Thus it’s reassuring to know that in the end, when it comes to building a life with someone important, generally nice guys don’t finish last. Women need family support Continued from page 5 some other counties as far as day care facilities are concerned. These women desperately need the sup port of their families and communi ties to allow them to fulfill the multiple roles that are demanded of them right now. What are you or your community doing about it? We’d be pleased to hear from anyone who has suggestions or has concerns about these problems. Brenda Scott, Assistant Queen’s Bush Rural Ministry.
