Phone Neil Hemingway, 887-6444 29-2 The Ministry of Natural Re sources has launched a rabies vaccination program for skunks in Scarborough as part of an experi mental rabies control program. The program began this week and runs until November 2. ‘‘Scarborough has had only three reported cases of rabid skunks since the beginning of our skunk vaccination project in 1987, com pared with 45 cases between 1980 and 1987,” said Natural Resources Minister Lyn McLeod. “Our re searchers are breaking new ground in wildlife rabies control in an urban environment, and the results are encouraging.” Four ministry technicians will set out special cage-like traps contain ing sardines to attract the skunks. A captured skunk will be given a rabies shot by an MNR technician, in much the same way as a veterinarian would vaccinate a pet. The skunk is then tagged for identification and released. The program will take place in a 60-square-kilometre area in the City of Scarborough south of High way 401 to Lake Ontario, and between Markham Road and Vic toria Park Avenue. Traps will be placed in one- square-kilometre sectors for five days, Monday through Friday, until the entire program areas has been covered. Ministry staff will monitor the traps daily. Research has shown that this method enables MNR’s rabies team to reach a majority of the animals. Last year, the ministry successfully immun ized 60 per cent of the skunk population in Scarborough.
