Report shows job training needed Open road 1 i «• There is a strong need for more training in the hospitality industry, according to a report released by the Ministry of Skills Development. The report, “Human Resource and Training Needs in Ontario’s Hospitality Industry’’, was based on interviews and industry, labor and education experts; a mail survey sent to thousands of Ontario businesses; and a number of employee focus groups. It was sponsored by the Ministries of Skills Development, Tourism and Recreation, and Colleges and Uni versities. According to the report, training is needed in such vital areas as safety, customer service and hu man resource management. The major problem identified by the report is attracting people with the right kind of skills and retaining them once they are hired. Better human resource management is seen as the key to improving this situation. The report indicates that employers who invest in training find it successful in reducing staff turnover, in some cases from 250 per cent to below 30 per cent a year. Another problem facing the industry is a continuing shortage of labor - particularly in the case of chefs and cooks. The shortage is greatest among part-time workers. Work continues on the roadway servicing Brussels industrial park. Work is to be completed by July 31. Two sets of buildings are already planned for sites in the new park. Farm, Residential, Auto, Commercial & Liability “When you become a policy holder, you become a share holder" Head office - Dungannon Election could stall legislation Ontario Farm Safety Association officials are hoping legislation con trolling the use of Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs won’t be sidetracked by an expected fall provincial election. Speaking at the Huron County Farm and Home Safety Association media day near Clinton Wednes day, George Underwood, Ontario president said a committee has worked long and hard to get government officials to agree to legislation that would prevent the misuse of SMVs for such things as marking laneways or barriers on the sides of highways. A committee with representatives of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Chris tian Farmers Association, the Farm Safety Association and others had been meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) and Ministry of Transport (MTO) to try to get new regulations. Some of the govern ment officials just didn’t know what the farm groups were talking about, Mr. Underwood said and there was a great deal of educating to do. A report was set to go to the minister but MOT officials halted the process because they wanted examples of other jurisidcations that had similar legislation on the books. The farm groups wanted the province to be a leader. They did find examples of other places such as British Columbia where similar regulations were in force. The association hoped the report would go to the minister last week, he said, with talk of the election supporters of the new regulations are worried. “We thought we had it (similar legislation) maybe twice before and it got caught in an election’’, Mr. Underwood said. If an election is called all bills not passed have to start the whole legislative process again. Farm leaders have told OMAF Minister David Ramsay they don’t want to see the needs of farmers hurt by politicians holding elections, he said.
