East Wawanosh Public School
Valedictory address
These are the best years of your life
BY ANNE TAYLOR
I would like to welcome the
teachers, parents, and special
guests on behalf of the 1989/90
Grade 8 graduating class. It’s
important that we have those
closest to us here tonight.
It seems like yesterday that all of
us, shy five years olds, clutching
our brand new lunch boxes, were
waiting to get on the big yellow bus
to take us to East Wawanosh Public
School.
When we arrived we were greet
ed by our teacher, Mrs. Shaddock.
I guess she had had enough of us
by Christmas time, because she left
and then we had a brand new
teacher named Mrs. Hessels.
When we came back the next
year, we got to move to another
classroom down the hall. That year
we were all full of energy and
wanted to learn. Mrs. Brydges, our
teacher, tried her best and every
one seemed to get along with her.
Mrs. Bosman was our Grade two
teacher and seemed scarier than
Mrs. Brydges. By the end of that
year a few people had sore ears.
On to grade three with our
teacher, Mr. Medd. That year we
were ready to learn French with
Madame Turcotte. We sold soup
for a fundraiser, and then we went
pn our first real trip, to London
going to Story Book Gardens and
then having a train ride.
We moved on to grade four with
two teachers. In the morning - Mr.
Stevenson and in the afternoon we
had Madame Turcotte. We soon
realized that Madame did not
approve of eye rolling. Several girls
got lectures on that!
In grade five and six we had Mr.
Harrison as our teacher. On the
grade five school trip we went to
Niagara Falls and in grade six we
went to Toronto and stayed over
night. Then there were the “trees”
in Mr. Harrison’s classroom but
enough of that.
On to grade seven with Mr.
Bartlett in the morning and Mrs.
Dodds in the afternoon. At Hallo
ween there were a few extra laughs
involving the skeleton hanging
from the ceiling, but we won’t
mention who the culprits were!
Finally we’re in grade eight with
Mrs. Daer and Mr. Bartlett, mak
ing choices that could decide if we
go to University, college or to join
the work force.
Next year - high school and sure
we’re all probably worried a bit
about: will I get lost on the first
day? or: will I be able to handle the
new work? But think of the good
things like fewer subjects, new
material to learn and more people

to make friends with.
Just think back to Kindergarten
and look at all the things you didn’t
know how to do like take responsi
bility for yourself and your work or
read, write, share, do math and
co-operate with one another.
We’ve learned a lot!
Grade nine, will be just like
kindergarten all over again: taking
the bus, wondering who you’ll sit
with or worrying that you’re going
to get lost. I guess that we will go
through the same things when we
start University or College.
You may think you’re going
through troubled times, but some
day you’ll look back and realize that
these were the best davs of your
life!

me in to my locker!
I would like to take the conclu
sion of my speech to thank all the
teachers on behalf of the class for
the nine years of dedicated work
they put into us. They stuck with us
through thick and thin. They have
prepared us for this step to high
school. Once we are no longer
nervous, all the years of prepara

tion will pay off as we work towards
our individual goals.
I would like to end my speech by
saying how proud I am of being
part of this exceptional group of
people. Seaforth Public School staff
deserve a pat on the back for the
tremendous job they did, and I
hope we can pay them back with
success.
Thanks

wall to hook onto such as you, our
friends.
Here is a poem that means a
great deal to me, written by Kriss
Sanchez.
THE WORLD
The world is always changing,
And perhaps it seems to you,
The values that you’ve taught us
Are the ones that we outgrew.
In many ways we’re not alike,
But yet it’s still so true,
The things we value most in us,
Are the things we’ve learned from
you.
I would like to again thank our
teachers, parents and friends for
letting us explore and search for
the people we are today. Congratu
lations to the graduates and be
happy as you stretch for the top of
your own personalized ladder.
