Valedictory address Greg McClinchey School taught us how the world worked > Of; BY GREG McCLINCHEY Challenge my mind, I’ll achieve greater heights. Develop me socially, I’ll service the community. Help me to grow, I’ll be healthy and strong. Encourage me spirtually, it will strengthen my soul. And I know I can make a difference. Friends, teachers, moms and dads: Like every book read a chapter is started and finished. However a new chapter always follows. Nine years ago I started a book of my own. It began with a page entitled Kindergarten. I was unsure if I could finish but with my family’s help and encouragement so far I have been able to go from chapter to chapter, grade to grade. I credit some of my success to my ■HI Jonathan Gerrits, Eric Kennedy, Derrick Cressman, Jonas Cook, Chris Van Loo, Joe Wood; (back) Tim Spaetzel, Wilfred Datema, Suzanne Schultz, Pam Salverda, Greg McClinchey, David Boonstoppel, Kerry Szusz, Cheri Kryzanowski, Erin Horbanuik, Brian Werkema and teacher Mr. Millson. From Mrs. Walters’ strict, yet fun, attitude and Mrs. Hoemig’s inno vative, yet slightly unorganized, ventures right through to Mr. Snell’s extremely dry humour. All this added together has brought me here today. Each page tested me over and over again as well as introducing new and vital faces. Each chapter giving me more responsibility than the last. In my junior years I found that it was mostly an introduction to what was yet to come. Here I was taught to approach things with an open mind and to co-operate with others at all times. This was a time to start and build new friendships. We took several trips at this time like my trips to the cider press, apple orchard and honey farm. These excursions helped me to see and understand how things work in my own little part of the world. In my intermediate years I found that this was mostly a time to say goodbye. Several friends moved away at this time which helped me to realize that a friendship must be strong in order to last over long periods of time. We also took a trip to Toronto which fit in nicely with our growing knowledge of Canada and its place in the world. Then came the senior years. Boy, it was great. In grade 8 we had the most outstanding spring musical this school has ever seen as well as our trip to Toronto which out of respect for some of my classmates we won’t get into. With Mr. Millson’s and Mr. Talbot’s help I finally made it here to graduation, one of the most nerve wracking experiences of my life. But tonight we become public school grads. Who knows what the future holds for us. In 20 years you may see my picture in a hospital waiting room for physician of the year, on a C.D. cover or even on T.V. haggel- ing over another Meech Lake Accord. But no matter where I go or what 1 do I will always remember Hullett and all the friends I made here. I know that all the little experiences I’ve had here have made me who I am today. A man once said “walk with confidence and the whole world will follow’’, so come on you guys let’s take the high schools by storm. Before I go I would like to wish all my friends luck in the future and thank my family, with special mention going out to my brother who I’m sure is here tonight, for all their support. From mom’s first tears of joy until the ones tonight I needed them all because if I can do this speech I can do anything.
