Central Public School Valedictory address 28 babies become 28 graduates at Grey Central BY DALE WERNHAM In the year 1976 the world was filled with the sound of crying babies - 28 different cries to be exact. There were birth announcements sent out from January to December announcing the new arrivals to the families of the Ahrends, Alexan ders, Boyds, Brubachers, Browns, Conelys, Earls, Finchs, Johnstons, Hemingways, Kerrs, Mienellys, Pearsons, Perries, Prescotts, Reads, Rutherfords, Sprouls, Strat tons, Thompsons, Tedimans, Van- keulens, Van Veens, Veitchs, Ver- staelons, Wernhams, Wingers and Zehrs. Little did anyone know that five years later all of the above would meet for the first time behind the big blue doors of Grey Central School. Our first introduction to each other and to education was either playing side by side at the sand box or sitting in the big bath tub trying to read a book. Under the capable hands of Mrs. Richman and Mrs. Whitmore our very first teachers, we had all become little scholars in shoe tying, counting and colouring. In grade 1 the illiteracy rate dropped dramatically as we were taught how to read by an enthusias- Dale Wernham Grey Central Grade 8 graduation was held at the school on Friday, June 22. The class is, front, from left: Simeon Brubacher, Jeremy Van Keulen, Daniel Pearson, Kara Kerr, Karie Rutherford, Cindy Brown, Shannon Boyd, Ryan Finch, Tony Read. Top row: principal Mr. Tessier, Richard Minielly, Mike Teddimen, Jason Verstraeten, Heather Thompson, Jennifer Stratton, Dale Wernham, Shawn Conley and Andy Sproul. tic Mrs. McKilliop who later in the year became Mrs. McKlellion to the disappointment of some of the boys. In grade two, addition and subtration was drilled over and over by Mrs. Martin, however the certificate of success with “smiley faces’’ we received was a pleasant reward. We were not quite prepared as we moved along to grade 3 for the cultural shock of having a man for a teacher. Mr. Livermore taught us the value of winning and of course good sportsmanship. However, this was not the last we saw of him. when we entered grade 5 there he was again and again we learned the same values. In between we had Mr. Perrie in grade 4. We had a very successful year. At the end of that year we knew that apples are red and apples are round. Entering the senior hall for the last four years of school we all became a little more confident. A new principal Mr. Whitely brought fresh new ideas to Grey Central and to our own grade 5 English class. Music taught by Mrs. Whit more for the first six years was boring, I mean, a learning experi ence as was the VIP-course. Mrs. Gillies taught us math and was the first to introduce us to the great library of knowledge. French was taught by Madame Colquhoun and grade seven was taught by Mr. Garland. They were combined to take us on an exciting week-long trip to Quebec. As we entered our final year of school we were entertained by the antics and teachings of Mr. Colquhoun. His main goal for the year was to prepare us for the real cruel world. By the sweat of our brow and muscle-cramped hands we worked to achieve a passing grade. The highlight to end a successful year was our trip to Toronto. I am honoured to have been chosen to represent the graduating class of 1990 to reminisce the past school years and to thank all those who have prepared us academically Continued on page 20 TOWNSHIP OF GREY BRUSSELS LIVESTOCK INC. 887-6461 CONGRATULATIONS Dale Machan PLUMBING, HEATING & ELECTRICAL Congratulations & Best Wishes North Huron Gardens Fruit & Vegetable Market R.R. 1 , Ethel Boneschanskers WALTON Brussels BESTjfwiSHES 887-6107 aiZia
