The three plan big changes. Registration will be held Thursday and Friday evenings this week. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, 1990. PAGE 15. Changes planned in rec. program An expanded summer play ground program is in the offing in Blyth this summer, one that will make it easier for working parents to have their children take part. The program will begin July 3 and this year sessions will take place at 8:30 in the morning so parents can drop their children off before going to work. Children will bring their lunches which will be stored in refrigerators at the Blyth and District Community Centre. Children will stay in the program until 4 p.m. each day, five days a week. These are some of the changes leader Dana Warren and her assistants Yvonne Pardys and Danielle McDougall have planned. “We’re going to have a great summer and a safe summer,’’ says Ms. Warren, a fourth year student at University of Guelph majoring in Child Studies with a minor in sports administration. She says she came to Blyth to head up the program because she wanted to have a chance to put the ideas learned in four years of education to work. Each week at the playground the program will have a special theme such as circus week or outer space week. During the week all activities such as crafts and games would be incorporated into the theme for the week. Any speakers or films showed would be along the themes of the week. There will be a safety week which will include a bicycle rodeo and perhaps a skateboard rodeo to test for safe driving practices. The children will be working with the Blyth Fire Department. There may be an Olympics Week in which children practise events, make their own flags and then compete against Wingham and Goderich recreation programs. There will be at least six field trips during the summer, though they may be smaller in scale than some major field trips of the past. Program activities will take place at the Lions Park and both the upstairs and downstairs of the arena. This year Ms. Warren says, the program will accept disabled child ren. “I think we have the training between the three of us’’ to be able to handle the problems that might arise’’, she says. Ms. Pardys has finished first year in Early Child hood Education at Conestoga Col lege while Ms. McDougall, who has completed Grade 9 at Central Huron Secondary School, has been a volunteer assistant in the pro gram for the past two years. The team is looking for more volunteer assistants this year, Ms. Warren says, people who may get the experience needed to take part as a leader in the years ahead. Registration for the program will be held June 21 and 22 at the arena from 7 - 9 p.m. Cost of the program this year will be $30 for the first child, $40 for a family of two children and $45 for three or more children for those families that are permanent residents of the village. For non-residents or seasonal residents the charge is $40 for the first child, $45 for two children and $50 for a family of three or more children. Children between the ages of kindergarten and age 12 will be accepted.
