Blyth Rutabaga Festival ’90
Kids can cast a line
Sunday morning the Rutabaga Festival
will leave the boundaries of the village
proper for the Children’s Fishing Derby at
Radford’s Pond, just south of the village.
The Radford group will organize the
event with Alps Creek Trout Farm of
Teeswater providing the trout. Trophies
will be donated by the Royal Canadian
Legion.
Prizes will be awarded in three age
categories: for boys and girls aged 2 - 5
years; 6 - 9 years and 10-12 years. Prizes
will go to the largest fish, smallest fish and
tagged fish in each category. The objective
of the organizers is for each child to walk
away with something.
Each child must be accompanied by an
adult and bring his or her own fishing
equipment and bait. Only two fish will be
allowed for each entrant. The fish can be
cleaned and cooked for the pot luck lunch
at the Lions Park on Sunday.
Special guests at the event will be
youngsters from community living groups
throughout the area.

STARTS FRIDAY
Plenty of activity Sunday
Although the full day of activities on
Saturday may slow some people down,
there is plenty to do for young and old on
Sunday, Family Day, at the annual Blyth
Rutabaga Festival.
Early in the morning Blyth Firemen will
be holding a pancake breakfast at the fire
hall at Mill and Dinsley Streets from 8 a.m.
to 10 a.m. Blyth Distributing is donating
orange juice for the breakfast.
Sunday is Family Day and beginning at
noon an old fashioned family picnic will be
held at the Lion’s Park. The Blyth Legion
Ladies Auxiliary will provide coffee for
adults and drinks for the kids. Families
should bring their own food.
Beginning at 2 p.m. family sports will
take place. There’ll be a wide assortment
of unusual games. For instance, there’s the
rutabaga toss, when three family members
will toss rutabagas into a 45-gallon drum
and their scores will be added up. Then
there’ll be the rutabaga accuracy toss
where three family members will throw
rutabagas through a tire with the total
score added up. There will be a rutabaga
sack race for children and adults. And
finally there will be rutabaga bowling with
three family members’ scores being added
up. Lawrie Decorating will donate four
trophies for the events.
Other activities
part of Festival
As well as the main events of the
Rutabaga Festival, other associated events

be holding a penny sale at the Blyth Legion
until 9 p.m. on Friday and all day Saturday.
Blyth Merchants will hold a sidewalk
sale Friday night until 11 p.m.

Festival and Blyth Lions will take place at 3

Huron pickerel.
