The club held their year-end barbecue on May 28. Since the Brussels Optimists club was formed in 1972 it has continually lived up to the organ­ ization’s motto: “Friend of Youth’’. The Brussels Optimists sponsor an Atom Hockey tourna­ ment that runs over two weekends in the middle of March. They have made donations to area projects, Brussels People By Bonnie Gropp Phone 887-9114 or 523-4792 Children and teachers of the Church Shool, Brussels United Church organized and participated in the Annual Flower Sunday Service on June 3. The chancel was filled with baskets of flowers from local gardens, and balloons in many colours. The communion table had lighted candles and a birthday cake to celebrate Pente­ cost. The Junior classes sang several numbers, and graduation certifi­ cates were presented to Church School members. Beth Crawford spoke on Pentecost and Happy Birthday. A puppet show “Cele­ brate the Difference’’ was enjoyed. Laura Cousins and Rob Gowing greeted people at the door. Pattie Harrison, Jenny and Rob Gowing read the scriptures. Kerri Foxton and Laurie Cousins took up the offering. Hope Jacobs and Curtis Graber led the service and were the puppeteers. Peter Workman was organist and Betty Graber, Joan Jacobs and Kathy Workman also took part. All present were treated to birthday cake at the close of the service. Congratulations to John and Pauleen Kerkhof on the birth of NOTICE TO BRUSSELS TAXPAYERS The second payment of taxes are due June 11, 1£90. B. Huah Hanly Tax Collector Village of Brussels their son Johannes Joseph, arrived Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London. Two bus loads of Brussels people travelled to the Skydome on Satur­ day to see the Jays play the Milwaukee Brewers. The trip, which was sponsored by the Opti­ mist Club left at 8:45 in the morning and stopped at good old “Mickie D’s” (McDonald’s) for lunch. Despite the fact the Jays lost 7-6, a good time was had by all. Supper was at the “Golden Arches’’ (McDonald’s) again and the troupe returned back to town at 9 p.m. On Saturday evening Ashley Gropp participated in a dance recital at Ross Hall in Guelph. About 100 students of Deanna Clatworthy of Encore Dance Studios in Guelph and Listowel performed ballet, tap and jazz routines for the near capacity crowd. Congratulations to Angie Yoon, Stephanie Henry, Laura Douma and Heather Somers, who per­ formed at the Walkerton Music Festival. Stephanie received two firsts and Angie four firsts. Angie was honoured at the Highlights concert and received a scholarship for further piano study. Mr. and Mrs. Lome McCauley of St. Marys called on their sister-in- law Mrs. Dorothy McCauley on Sunday, May 'll and had coffee. Mrs. Audrey Richmond of Detroit called on her cousin Mrs. Dorothy McCauley on Monday afternoon, May 28. has been placed there to recognize their work. The newest contribu­ tion, and possibly the largest, made by the club to the ball diamond is the installation of lights. Cost of the project was $25,000. In addition to the work done by club members, the project was made easier by the work of several area individuals. Glen McKercher donated backhoe time, Maitland Redi-Mix gave $500 towards the concrete, Les Bernard gave the club the use of a bucket truck, while McDonald’s Buildall donated the boom truck.
