Here they browsed through some of the items at the Parents’ Association’s Garage Sale at Grey Central School on Saturday. Brussels Legion installs 1990-91 executive Separate School Director resigns BY SANDRA JOSLING On Friday, May 11 a team from Seaforth Legion visited Brussels to install the new 1990-91 Br. 218 Legion and Ladies Auxiliary execu­ tive. Installed to the Legion were: Ross Bennett, president; Al Nichol, first vice president; Frank Stretton, second vice-president; Eric Ross, secretary; Marg Bennett, treasur­ er; Ted Elliott, service officer; Borden Linkletter, Padre and Mur­ ray Lowe, Dave Taylor, Glenn Bridge, Mary Ellen Keller, execu­ tive committee. To the Ladies Auxiliary, Jayne Ross was installed as president; Jean Little, first vice-president; Doreen Rutledge, second vice- president; Barb Graber, secretary; Barb Knight, treasurer and Verna Tunney, Helen Dobson, Elizabeth Sholdice, Lillian Moses, executive committee. OPP report quiet weekend The first long weekend of the summer was, according to a spokesperson from the Wingham OPP detachment, “pretty quiet”. There were no accidents report­ During the general meeting May 14 a motion was passed to give donations to the following organiz­ ations: the Salvation Army, $50; and $250 to Grey Central Public School for the purchase of new books to develop a literature based reading and writing program. On Wednesday, May 9 trophies were given to the winners of the Wednesday night Mixed Dart League. Most points for the ladies went to Jean Little with Kitty Rutledge second. Finishing on top for the men was Dave Adams with Barry Engel and Adam Smith tied for second. This year’s season was concluded yet anyone wishing to play darts, there is fun dart night every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. On Tuesday, May 22 the Brus­ sels Legion Cadets will be having their annual inspection. The in­ spection will commence at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to watch is wel­ come to come and see. ed over the three day weekend in the district, the spokesperson stat­ ed, and police had only six liquor seizures during that time. The Huron-Perth Roman Catho­ lic Separate School Board has accepted the resignation of William (Bill) Eckert effective June 30, 1990. The Trustees and Administration honoured Mr. Eckert with a stand­ ing ovation as a tribute to his many accomplishments as Director of Education. Improvements of the past 14 years have significantly and in a positive way affected the quality of learning and the quality of life for children and staff in the Catholic schools of Huron and Perth Counties. Mr. Eckert wrote in his letter of resignation that “change can be a very positive revitalizing thing and with this decision, I will be able to involve myself in new endeavours and areas of interest. I wish to thank the Board for having given me the opportunity to serve Catholic Edu­ cation in this jurisdiction. I feel particularly honoured to have held the position of Director of Educa­ tion and shall retain many fond memories of what have been very interesting and satisfying years”. Cooks challenged at contest Anyone with a tasty rutabaga recipe, will be interested in the “Rutabaga Recipe Roundup Con­ test” to be held at Memorial Hall on June 23, just one of the many scheduled events planned for Blyth’s first annual Rutabaga Fes­ tival. Participants can enter in as many of the categories as they like. These include: cakes, pies, muffins or loaves, and the most creative recipe using rutabaga. Recipes must accompany the entry in order to use them in a future cook book. Judging will begin at 10:30 a.m. June 23 at Memorial Hall and the winners will receive trophies and prizes and the honour of being in the parade, while the rest of the entries will be available for sample with coffee. Proceeds will go to the Rutabaga Festival. Each recipe must, of course, contain rutabagas as an ingredient. Free rutabagas will be available at the village office after June 18. To test your culinary creativity, here are some recipes for you to try. 1 Golden Cheesecake [dessert] 1-1/4 cups rutabaga, cooked and pureed (see note below) 1-2/3 cups fine graham cracker crumbs 1/3 cup butter, melted 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup cold water 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup milk 3 eggs separated 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 pint whipping cream (10 ounces) 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon grated orange rind. Cube 2-2/3 cups rutabaga. Drop into boiling salted water and cook until just tender. Drain. Puree in blender or whip in mixmaster or by hand. This should yield 1-1/4 cups pureed rutabaga - set aside. In a letter to the staff he wrote “I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to work with teachers, support staff and admini­ stration who are competent, confi­ dent and committed to the welfare of our students in our classrooms and schools. If I have been at all successful in my work it has been in considerable measure because of your support.” Being only in his early fifties, Bill will have many options to pursue Health Ministry issues new seniors cards Ontario seniors will soon be getting full details of the new system of Health 65 cards being introduced this year. The Ministry of Health is issuing every resident over 65 with one new white and red plastic card to replace both the current OHIP card and the Ontario Senior Citizen Privilege card. The individual Health 65 cards, Mix crumbs and butter. Reserve 1/4 cup and press remainder on bottom of 9 inch spring form pan. Chill, soften gelatin in cold water in top part of small double boiler. Add 1/2 cup sugar, salt, milk and slightly beaten egg yolks. Cook over boiling water, stirring until slightly thickened. Pour over cheese and reserved pureed ruta­ baga. Beat until smooth and blended. Cool. Beat egg whites until foamy; add 1/4 cup sugar and beat until stiff. Whip cream and fold into first mixture; fold in egg whites. Add flavorings. Pour into prepared pan, sprinkle with reserved crumbs and chill until firm. 10 to 12 servings. 2 Ontario Rutabaga Spice Cake [dessert] 1/2 cup shortening 1 cup sugar 1 cup cooked mashed rutabaga 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour WINGHAM AND DISTRICT HOSPITAL CORPORATION Notice is hereby given that the Annual Meeting of the Wingham and District Hospital Corporation will be held in the Nursing Assistants Training Centre, Catherine St., Wingham, Ontario on Thursday, June 21,1990, at the hour of eight o’clock p.m., for the revision of bylaws; forthe election of Governors; for the appointment of Auditors; and for the transaction of such other things as may properly come before the meeting. Benefits will remain the same, but all that will be needed is the one new card. 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup chopped nuts - optional 1/4 teaspoon soda 1/2 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cloves 2 teaspoons baking powder Cream shortening. Add sugar gradually and cream well. Add eggs, beating well. Add rutabaga and mix well. Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, soda and spices. Add alternately with milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Add nuts and mix well. Bake in a tall 5 to 6 cup jelly mold at 350°F for 70 to 75 minutes. Let cake cool in mold for 10 minutes on cake rack; then loosen edges with tip of a knife. Invert to unmold. Drizzle with lemon glaze. (Alternative - bake in 9” x 9” x 2” pan at 350°F for 45 to 50 minutes and serve with lemon butter icing.)
