HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1990-05-09, Page 3Anniversary cake Past Presidents of the Blyth Women’s Institute were on hand to cut the 80th anniversary cake at a celebration in Blyth Thursday night last week. Taking part in the ceremony were (front row, left to right) Winnie Johnston, Audrey Walsh, Luella McGowan, Jean Nethery, Eunice Emke, Pat Taylor (rear), Isabelle Craig and Lenore Davidson. Blyth WI celebrates 80th The Blyth Women’s Institute celebrated its 80th Anniversary with a guest list of 90 members, former members, past presidents and special guests. Ella Carter presided over the guest book while President Jean Nethery greeted at the door. Cor­ sages of yellow carnations were pinned on Jean and Brenda Brooks. A beautiful arrangement of yel­ low carnations accented with blue decorated the table. This arrange­ ment was donated by Past Presi­ dent Isabelle Craig and was taken to Evalena Webster who was unable to attend. “O Canada’’ and the W.I. Ode Blyth. The Blyth Festival Singers under the direction of Angus Sinclair, were one of the guest choirs which participated in the Bach Saugeen Festival. The programme featured J. S. Bach’s music in the first half and a variety of Canadian music in the second half. The concert was held in Knox Presbyterian ^Church in Walkerton on April 29 and the choir sang to a most receptive and enthusiastic audience. Upcoming performances for the Festival Sin­ gers include services at Londesboro United Church, St. John’s Anglican in Wingham and the Opening Night of the Blyth Festival. Visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Daer were Lome Daer and Jack Fallis on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. James Boyce of Bayfield visited Saturday with Bert and Dorothy Daer. June Daer and sister Ann from were sung with Gladys Van Camp at the piano. Jean Nethery wel­ comed all. Brenda Brooks intro­ duced guests as follows:District President, Mary Hunter; Board Director, Lois Elliott; Area Presi­ dent, Laureen McIntosh; Past Pre­ sidents, Isabelle Craig, Luella Mc­ Gowan, Winnie Johnston, Eunice Emke, Audrey Walsh, Pat Taylor and Lenora Davidson. The audience was then favoured by violin music by Zoellyn, Capu- cine and Teague Onn who are part of the Huron String School. They were thanked for an excellent variety of music and talent by Ida Procter. New Hamburg visited on Sunday evening with Bert and Dorothy Daer. The Blyth Women’s Institute’s birthday celebration held on May 3 provided top notch entertainment. One highlight of the Blyth Women’s Institute birthday party on May 3 was guest speaker Steven Souch who spoke on his life in Norway during 1988-89: his school­ ing, his travels, and the four families with whom he lived. He used the words mother, dad, brothers, and sister when referring to reach family. Steve interspersed his information with many humor­ ous anecdotes delightful to the audience. His many pictures were superb: rugged mountain peaks, powerful waterfalls providing ample electric power; city churches of cathedral design and quaint country wooden ones. Among his scenes was one of the king walking his dog. He was surprised at the extent and effi- Continued on page 19 Lenora Davidson introduced Steven Souch who gave a very interesting account of his year’s stay in Norway as an exchange student, along with beautiful slides and humorous events. Steven was thanked by Isabelle Craig. Two skits were performed by Anna VanderHeyden, Vera Badley and Brenda Brooks and Vera favoured with a humorous reading “Little Snake, Big Problems’’. The Anniversary Cake made by Debbie Craig was cut by President Jean and all Past Presidents. Highlights of the past 80 years compiled by Ella Carter were read by Anne Mclnnes. The Queen and W.I. Grace was followed by a social time and sandwiches and cake and ice cream. Special thanks was given to Marie Heffron, Marie Cronyn and Sandra Deveau for helping in the kitchen.
