Turkey escapee spotted A wild turkey spotted in East Wawanosh Township recently was likely an escapee from an area farm, an official with the Ministry of Natural Resources says. Rob Gibson of the MNR’s Hullett Wildlife Centre says wild turkeys have been re-introduced into five areas of the province but haven’t yet been stocked in Huron, in part , because of domesticated wild tur keys that have escaped from pens. The problem of the escapees is particularly strong in the Saratoga Swamp area, he said. The siting, about three miles west of Blyth, was out of the normal area for the turkeys to be spotted. Mr. Gibson said the escaped turkeys might carry diseases that would affect the wild turkeys if they were stocked by the Ministry. In addition there is worry about the domesticated birds breeding with the true wild turkeys. Before a stocking could take place in Huron county the escaped turkeys would have to be eliminated, he said.
