Many help celebrate couple’s golden day Friends, relatives and neigh­ bours gathered at the Women’s Institute Hall on Sunday, April 15, 1990 to help Lewis and Helen Stonehouse celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary. The biggest surprise of all was two nieces, Ann and Janie Stone­ house, now Ann Leake and Janie Kersten of Scottsdale, Arizona who spent eight months living with their uncles and aunts Lewis and Helen Stonehouse and the late Bob and Ellen Coultes while their parents Belgrave Compiled by Mrs. Helen Stonehouse. Phone 887-9487 were living in Arizona due to the poor health of their father Dr. Gordon Stonehouse. At this time Ann was five and Janie, two and a half years of age. Lewis and Helen were married at the manse of Wingham United Church by the Rev. J. F. Anderson, April 18, 1940 with Harvey Edgar their best man and Frances (Edgar) Holland their maid of honour. Following their honeymoon to Toronto they took up farming on the groom’s farm on the 9th concession of East Wawanosh Twn. now owned by Roy and Mary Robinson. Here they resided until 1955 when they moved to their present home in Belgrave, at 13 Jane St., when Lewis traded farm­ ing for carpentry work. Both have been active members of their church and community. As Euchre winners Mm-mm Little Lisa Weitendorf is far too busy eating a cookie to be concerned with the rattle Mom Shannon is showing her. The two visited the Belgrave Anglican Church Women’s Garage and Bake Sale that was held at the Institute Hall on Saturday morning. The event was so well attended that the ladies were almost sold out within half an hour of opening the doors. and and and Residents host weekend guests Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hanna over the Easter weekend were Mr. Mrs. Brian Storer, Adam Crystal of Kitchener and Mr. Mrs. Ross Hanna of Listowel. Mrs. Ruth Coyne of Windsor is spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Taylor and other Robinson relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Russell and Sarah of Geulph recently visited with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pletch. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Vincent, Carrie, Stuart, Alex and friend of Milton, Paul Vincent of Burlington, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Taff, David and Linda Taff, Doug, Don and Jason Taff of London, Mrs. Sharon Mit­ chell, Jeff and Debbie of Hanover spent Sunday afternoon with par­ ents Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Vincent. Murray McDowell of Cookstown and Mrs. Kenneth Walsh of Milk River, Alberta were dinner guests at the home of their cousin Mr. and Mrs. Harold Vincent, Friday, April 20. Other relatives who were guests at the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Vincent, Mrs. Dorothy Logan and Mrs. Murray Vincent, all of Belgrave. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse received a wonderful surprise on Sunday, April 15 when Mrs. Ann (Stonehouse) Leake, Mrs. Janie (Stonehouse) Kersten of Scotts­ dale, Arizona, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smart (Shirley Stonehouse) of Waskada, Manitoba, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Ellis (Sonja Stonehouse) and family of Whitevale, Ontario visit­ ed for their 50th anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Yuill and Miss Edith Stokes and Clarence Stokes were Easter Sunday visitors at the home of Mrs. Yuill’s son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Elliott of Arkona, Ontario, Sunday, April 15. Also visiting at the same home was Mrs. Yuill’s daughter Mrs. Linda Lichtenberger and family of St. Thomas. Barbara Coultes of Toronto spent Easter weekend with her mother Mrs. Janisa Coultes. Mr. and Mrs. George Johnston, Tara and Erin of Ilderton spent the Easter weekend with their parents Mrs. Laura Johnston, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grasby. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Leitch, Julie and Jeff of Waterdown spent the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grasby. Mrs. Allan McDonald, Adam and Corey of Wingham visited with their grandmother Mrs. Olive Campbell and their aunt Mrs. Ivy Cloakey on the Easter weekend. Other relatives visiting at the same home were Mrs. Eleanor Campbell and her son Geoffrey and his wife Mary Anne of London. Danny Thompson and friend Holly of Toronto, Mrs. Marilyn Thompson and Chester MacDonald were easter Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Johnston. Neighbours and friends of this community wish to extend sincere sympathy to Charles Cook and family on the death of a dear wife and mother who passed away in the Wingham and District Hospital, Tuesday, April 9. Vincent Makas and daughter Alicia of London were Easter visitors of Mrs. Mabel Wheeler. announced Fifteen tables were in play at the weekly euchre which was held in the W.I. Hall, Belgrave Wednes­ day, April 18. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. Leslie Vincent; second high lady, Mrs. Clarence Hanna; most 2’s on card, Mrs. Lloyd Appleby; low lady, Mrs. Margaret Robertson; high man, Ross Taylor; second high man, Stanley Black; most 2’s on card, Mrs. Edythe Coultes (playing as a man); low man, Jim Smith. There will be euchre again Wednesday, April 25 starting at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Card Cavalcade raises close to $2,000 The Auxiliary to the Clinton Public Hospital (CPH) held its annual meeting on April 9. It was followed by their April meeting. Annual reports of committee chairpersons showed a most suc­ cessful and productive year. Of special interest were the results of a new venture this year that replaced the Vanishing Card par­ ties ... the Card Cavalcade which had proved most successful having raised nearly $2,000. Margaret Conventry, nominating chairperson, introduced and in­ stalled the slate of officers for the 1990-91 executive. They are Presi­ dent, Patrician Carrier; first vice- president, Leona Towton; second vice-president, Bernice Jewson; Secretary, Esther Wright; and Treasurer, Rae McFarlene. A new concept for a gift card was introduced. These cards may be purchased from the gift shop and would state that a gift has been given on someone’s behalf to the Auxiliary in honour of their special Birthday, Anniversary, etc. The Auxiliary newsletter is being revised and will be put together in the near future and will be received by all members. Canada Health Day, Friday, May 11, will be the day of the Annual Tag Day in Clinton and Bayfield. Funds raised through this help support the hospital. A new fund raiser will be chaired by Margaret Middleton. This will be a travelling quilt on which tickets will be sold. The Region No. 2 Spring Confer­ ence will be held on Monday, April I 30, at the Conestoga Inn, Kitchener I hosted by the Freeport Hospital I Volunteer Association and will be ■ attended by 12 Auxiliary members I from Clinton and Bayfield. It was decided that next month I the group would turn over to the I hospital $7,000 of the $15,000 I pledged towards the X-ray equip- I ment. The next meeting will be I Monday, May 7 at 10 a.m. I well as being an elder of the United Church, Lewis has been its trea­ surer for over 25 years. Helen has been a newspaper correspondent for several years as well as volun­ teering many hours to the Belgrave School Fair, fowl supper and United Church Women. Following the Open House, many of their relatives enjoyed a pot luck dinner at the hall. After a delicious meal, Edith Walker read a poem about Helen and Lewis’ life together. Lewis and Helen gra­ ciously thanked everyone involved with making this a fantastic day full of many memories as well as the many gifts and cards. Special awards were received from the Governor General of Canada, Pre­ mier of Ontario, Prime Minister of Canada and Member of Parliament from Huron-Bruce. Those attending their Golden Wedding Anniversary came from: Scottsdale,. Arizona; Waskada, Manitoba; Whitevale, St. Cathar­ ines, St. Thomas, Aylmer, London, Cambridge, Listowel, Petrolia, Brigden, Ilderton, Guelph, Water­ down, Bayfield, Arva, Barrie, Lis­ towel, Tavistock, Toronto, Gorrie, Teeswater, Goderich, Brussels, Bluevale, Blyth, Kitchener, Wing­ ham, Lucknow, Auburn and Bel­ grave.
