But not enough pucks from the Drayton Comets were stopped by the Crusaders at Saturday’s game and they lost 8 to 6 to begin their Grand Champion playoff series with a loss. Belgrave Tykes end season at Huron Park tournament On Saturday, April 7 the Brus- a seis Crusaders opened their Grand sr Championship playoff series with the Drayton Comets in the Wing­ ham arena. The Crusaders opened the scor­ ing a little over nine minutes into the period when Ken Cousins and Bill Haines combined to set up Kevin Deitner for the goal. Brus­ sels made it 2-0 when Brian Campbell finished off a set up by Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter. Drayton scored once before the end of the period to make the score 2-1 Brussels, after one period of play. Brussels regained their two-goal lead three and a half minutes into the second period when Cousins combined with Mike Watson to set up Dave Stephenson for the goal. The Crusaders added another to their lead when Troy Pocaluyko scored an unassisted goal. It was a little over a minute later when Deitner made it a four goal lead when he completed a set up from Cousins and Stephenson. The rest of the period belonged to Drayton as they scored four straight goals in the last 10-minutes of the period to even the score at 5-5 after two periods. Drayton took their first lead of the game when they scored four minutes into the third period. The Crusaders tied the score up half­ way through the period when Trev Pocaluyljp scored with Brian Ten Pas and Troy Pocaluyko drawing ' l', assists on the play. However Drayton once again took the lead a minute later and then added an empty-net goal for the 8-6 victory and a one game lead in the series. CRUSADERS BOUNCE BACK Game two was held Sunday, April 8 in the Harriston Arena. The Crusaders scored the only goal of the first period w hen Kevin Deitner scored from Dave Stephen­ son and Troy Pocaluyko just two minutes into the game for 1-0 lead after one period. Drayton tied the score after just five minutes of play in the second frame. The Crusaders didn’t waste any time getting that one back as they scored 21 seconds later when Ken Cousins set up Deitner for his second of the game. Brussels then increased the lead when Pocaluyko and Bill Haines combined to set up David Montgomery for the score. Drayton cut the lead to one again before Deitner added his third of the game for his hat-trick with Cousins drawing the lone assists on the play. The score after two periods of play was 4-2 Brussels. The Crusaders made it a three- goal lead six minutes into the third when Montgomery and Brian Ten Pas combined to set up Pocaluyko for the goal. Brussels added to their lead seven minutes after when Dave Harding and Ken Higgins set up Cousins for the goal. CENTRE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Brussels Curling Club held its annual banquet and dance at the Brussels Legion on Saturday, April 7. President of the Ladies Curling Club, Sue Gowing opened the meeting by thanking the Legion Ladies for serving a delicious roast beef dinner. Past President of the Mixed Curling Club, Doug Shol- dice, introduced the head table. The new executive for 1990-91 was announced. They are: Past Presi­ dent, Orval Bauer; President, Pau­ line Patterson; first Vice-President, George Langlois; second Vice- President. Ernie Lewington; Secre­ tary-Treasurer. Nancy Exel; Bar Committee. Bob Alexander, Mer- vyn Bauer. Brian Warwick; Draw goal with two and a half minutes left in the game. That was how the game ended 7-2 for the Crusaders and they have tied the series 1-1. The third game of the series will be held on Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Wingham while game 4 will be Saturday, April 14 at 2 p.m. in Harriston. If game 5 is necessary it will be Sunday, April 15 at 2:30 in Wingham. Michelle Vader. Continued on Page 25 The Belgrave Tykes ended the 1989-90 hockey season at a tour­ nament at Huron Park. In the first game, Belgrave was downed 4-0 by Bayfield. The Belgrave players just could not capitalize on their shots. The team fared better against Zurich, even though the local lads lost 4-3 in the second overtime period. Tim Robinson scored all three Belgrave markers and Craig Marks recorded one assist. During the first three minutes of overtime, no goals were scored, so the next three minutes were played without goalies. Although Belgrave lost, the game provided lots of excitement and was a great finish to the Legion announces dart winners BY SANDRA JOSLING Winners from the Dart Tourna­ ment, March 24 held at the Brussels Legion are as follows: first, Barry Engel, Marg Bennett, Deb Cann; second, Gord Jacklin, Shirley Taylor and Jean Little. On Monday, April 16 Branch 218 will be holding the election of officers. All voting members are urged to attend. On April 20 at 8 p.m. the Legion will be having a pub night. Earlier last month, the Belgrave Tykes tied Hensall 3-3. Robinson scored two for Belgrave, while Marks added another goal. Anderson, in goal for Belgrave, was pulled with two minutes left to play, but the team just could not score.
