Group’s labour supports arena Since its inception in February of 1979, the Brussels, Morris and Grey Catering Committee has do nated hours of volunteer labour and thousands of pies to an average of 20 banquets per year for a total of 223 dinners. All of the money acquired from these dinners goes towards the upkeep of the BMG Community Centre - a large sum from one year went to the black topping of the parking lot, and the group pays the insurance costs each year. The balance of the money for 1989 was $10,667.01 which is down somewhat from 1988’s year-end total of $11,290.34. Receipts from last year, raised from 15 catered banquets, came to $19,166.58 for a total of $30,456.92. Expenses, including a donation, of $12,000 to Recreation in 1989 amounted to $19,789.89. Volunteer Audrey Cardiff noted that while last year’s total was down from the previous year 1990 promises to be higher as there are more bookings. Six dinners have been served since January 1, with five dinners booked for April. One of the biggest events over the last six years has been the Gay Lea banquet in early December when the catering group prepares for 450 people. A fundraising dance was held on March 24 and was a great success thanks to all the people who bought tickets and supported the group. Members were especially apprecia tive to those who donated lunch and helped serve during the even ing in addition to the efforts of the decorating, ticket and advertising committees. A profit after expens es of $1,813.20 was made for the arena. According to BMG Catering convenor Bessie Johnston there are about 90 volunteers in the group now but they are always looking for new members and suggests that newcomers to the community would find it a great way to meet people in the area and help out. Helen Elliott opened the meeting with a poem for spring, “Lion or Lamb”. This was followed by the hymn, “The Glory of the Spring how sweet”. The Bible reading was taken from Matthews 21; 1-11 and read in unison, followed by prayer. Isabel Adams presented a paper on ‘The Life of St. Patrick’. Guest for the evening was Winona Martin who showed us slides of her most recent trip to Russia. She opened with a brief history of the area, then took her audience step by step on a fascinating journey through Poland, north-western Russia to Leningrad and home through Fin land, Sweden and Denmark. The meeting closed with the hymn ‘Be Still My Soul’, sung to the great tune Finlandia. After a short business period, members and guests enjoyed a social time together. It was decided to serve the Maytime Supper in the church on Wednesday, May 30.
