Huron group to study
affordable housing
A Huron county citizen’s group
is hoping to find out more informa
tion about affordable housing for
the working poor, single mothers,
seniors, the physically disabled and
young people living away from
home. A 1987 study concluded
these groups were most in need of
affordable housing and the group is
hoping to find out more about these
needs through a survey.
The Huron County Access to
Permanent Housing Committee
was formed .about a year ago by
representatives of concerned
groups. Most committee members
come from within the county, and
meet regularly in Goderich. Their
research project is designed to give
details about who is in need of
affordable/accessible housing,
where this housing is needed, and
what kind of housing is required.
The heart of the study is a
questionnaire. Items on the ques
tionnaire are detailed, but can be
the basis of an application for
future non-profit housing by those
who fill them out. Respondents can
also choose to remain anonymous.
The committee expects that, as a
p.m., Rev. John Zondag officiat
ing. Spring interment is in Wroxe
ter cemetery.
Donations to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Ontario or to
the Alzheimer Society of Canada
would be appreciated as expres
sions of sympathy.
result of the research study, they
will be able to apply for funding for
non-profit housing for Huron Coun
ty within the next two or three
years. A business reply envelope is
provided so that those who respond
can simply put their completed
questionnaire in the mail.
The Committee hopes that many
of the individuals and families in
Huron County who have difficulty
finding affordable/accessible hous
ing will fill out the questionnaire.
The larger the number of people
who express a need for affordable/
accessible housing, the more com
pelling will be the information
gathered. The committee can then
apply to the Ministry of Housing
for funding for non-profit housing.
Access to Permanent Housing
Committees are based in towns like
Stratford and London, and have
successfully lobbied for non-profit
housing for those areas. The Huron
County Committee hopes for the
same outcome as a result of their
current research project.
Copies of the questionnaire can
be obtained by contacting the
committee at 519-524-5333 or
1-800-265-5506.
